Fellowships for Female Doctoral Candidates

AAUW Mission
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) promotes equity for all
women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change.
AAUW Educational Foundation Mission
The AAUW Educational Foundation (EF) provides funds to advance education,
research, and self-development for women, and to foster equity and
positive societal change.
AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund Mission
The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) works to combat sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace.
LAF works to combat sex discrimination through community and campus outreach programs, a resource library and online advocacy tools, and various research reports. In collaboration with the Public Policy and Government Relations department, LAF seeks amicus curiae opportunities in workplace sex discrimination cases. LAF also provides support to workplace sex discrimination cases that have the potential to make a difference for all women.
AAUW Austin Branch Goals for 2008-2009
- Achieve State recognition for the sixteenth consecutive
year.
Objective: To focus on leadership, membership diversity,
and AAUW issues.
Focus on leadership, membership diversity, and AAUW issues by:
- Awarding higher education scholarships
- Educating membership about Association goals
- Educating membership about public policy issues
- Continuing local projects; and
- Fundraising
- Gain visibility for AAUW's mission, issues, and activities.
Objective: To increase community awareness of programs, projects,
and achievements.
Focus awareness on Branch programs by:
- Working closely with the media
- Broadening programs to appeal to audiences beyond membership
- Collaborating with other organizations to advance AAUW's mission
- Meet local and Association contribution goals.
Objective: To give funds to the Educational Foundation and the
Legal Advocacy Fund.
Focus on meeting local and Association contribution goals by:
- Encouraging members to become major donors
- Planning an event to meet the EF goal
- Planning an event to meet the LAF goal
- Encouraging members to purchase Collin Street Bakery products
for additional fundraising
- Encouraging members to support businesses that provide products
or additional fundraising for AAUW
- Continue to recruit and retain members.
Objective: To retain 85% of the 2008-2009 membership and to
increase membership by 5%.
Focus on recruiting and retaining membership by:
- Planning membership open house event
- Establishing a mentoring process to develop relationships
between veteran and new members
- Connecting new members to Branch activities
- Providing a variety of study groups
- Providing monthly Branch programs that interest a varied
membership
- Providing a program to recruit and involve younger members
- Continue to promote diversity in membership and services.
Objective: To increase membership by recruiting and retaining
members who can increase our diversity and relevance.
Focus on promoting diversity in membership and services by:
- Organizing activities that celebrate and embrace diversity
- Planning a Holiday Tea to celebrate many cultures
- Connecting to organizations serving minority women and ethnic
groups
- Providing venues comfortable to all
- Work with community organizations and individuals to support
our advocacy mission.
Objective: To increase AAUW's effectiveness in community.
Focus on building coalitions by supporting community organizations
that share our mission and goals. Examples include but are not
limited to the following groups:
- Austin Community Collegee
- Austin Convention and Visitor Bureau
- Coalition of Public Schools
- Girl Scouts - Lone Star Council
- GirlStart
- Hispanic Women's Network of Texas
- International Hospitality Council of Austin
- League of Women Voters
- Local Chambers of Commerce
- Mainspring School
- Pay Equity Organization
- Southcentral Girls Collaborative
- Ten Thousand Villages
- Texas Freedom Network
- Texas Women's Coalition
- University of Texas; and
- Women's Legislative Days
