ABOUT OUR CENTER

A project of the Indigenous Women's Network, Alma de Mujer is a conference/retreat center located in the beautiful foothills at Lake Travis within a fertile valley surrounded by trees and streams. Alma is an affordable retreat facility available for booking to both non-profit and for-profit groups and individuals working in the fields of education, the environment, cultural and social awareness, the healing arts, women, family, children and youth groups, social justice and indigenous organizations. We have served more than 400 local, regional, national and international organizations in the 8 years of our operation.

Located 20 miles northwest of Austin, the natural and rustic setting provides a beautiful, private environment. Our main lodge has 4,000 square feet of space and our sleeping quarters can accommodate 30 people. Encampments are possible for larger groups. Catering, camping, organic gardening, volleyball, meditation knoll, canoeing and Jacuzzi are also available. We are available daily, weekly or weekends.

FACILITIES

Main Lodge
Meeting/Dining Space

Our Main Lodge is a spacious 4,000 square foot, two story sky-lit cedar lodge complete with a natural stone fireplace, commercial kitchen, three bathrooms and a large outdoor porch/deck. The main floor of the lodge serves as meeting space and dining area where Alma's video and resource library, international craft corner and indigenous art collections are available for year-round viewing.  This area can be arranged to conform to your special needs, with either seated or buffet dining, creating a more informal meeting space for larger groups.

Office space with FAX, computer, VCR and Xerox capabilities, slide projector, and flip charts is available.

Sleeping Accommodations

Our sleeping facilities can accommodate thirty people.

Encampments

For larger groups, we can accommodate campers with tents. Our encampment area is located along Cypress Pond nearest the meditation knoll and garden.

Meals

Alma's kitchen provides creative, healthy, and quality vegetarian or meat menus supplemented with seasonal herbs and vegetables from her sustainable garden. Menus are created with group and individual dietary needs in mind and prepared by experienced and loving hands.  For planned meals, a minimum number of person is required and meals are charged on a per guest basis, separate from the room charge.

Jacuzzi/Wet Area

The Jacuzzi is located across the meadow, overlooking Cypress Creek. A rock flower and herb garden surround the enclosed Jacuzzi area. A lounging area, deck and a cold water shower can be enjoyed both night and day.

Organic Garden/Fruit Orchard

In keeping with the spirit of maintaining a sustainable and healthy environment, Alma has also developed a one acre model organic garden. Alma's garden serves as a role model to the community in using self-sustaining, traditional agriculture methods as well as supplementing meals for guests.

Meditation Knoll/Pond

Cypress Creek, main artery to Lake Travis, provides Alma with a beautiful lush spring-fed pond. Canoeing, swimming, and hammocks provide recreation and relaxation. "Madre el Mundo," life-size sculpture is the centerpiece of the meditation knoll.

Other Components at Alma

Youth Programs, Native and Latin American Resource/Information Library, Extensive Video Resource Library of international, environmental and women's issues and Residency/Internship Programs.

Alma's educational component offers seasonal seminars and workshops to our communities. Such workshops have been highly successful in working with "at-risk youth" and summer programs for the disadvantaged. We have offered cultural arts programming, traditional pottery, indigenous history past and contemporary, organic gardening workshops, youth and elders gatherings and peer group and mentor guidance.

Mary Gainer Becker will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding our center. A map to our center and guidelines will be sent to retreat coordinators once your conference is booked.

A heartfelt thanks to Genevieve Vaughan and the Foundation for a Compassionate Society for the past years of support and vision.
