We are a coalition of community organizations and concerned citizens dedicated to the principle that every working person is entitled to a decent standard of living. We are therefore seeking a Living Wage for all of Austin's working people, a wage that makes it possible to afford adequate housing, health care, food, clothing, and recreation. Toward this end we are engaged in direct action, education, coalition building, public advocacy, and legislative efforts. Our members include faith-based organizations, neighborhood groups, labor unions, and political organizations. We welcome participation from individuals and groups who share our goals, and who will commit to supporting our efforts by contributing funds, volunteer time, or other resources. We are very proud to have made significant progress in our work with the City of Austin, Travis County, Austin Community College, and the Austin Independent School District in securing Living Wage policies for their employees. As we continue with an incremental approach, our next goal is passage of a local ordinance to require that recipients of city contracts or other assistance pay a Living Wage to their employees. Our task will not be complete until every Austinite has the dignity that comes from earning enough to meet one's basic needs. Particularly in the midst of a booming local economy, we find it unconscionable that many of our neighbors work for wages too low for them to afford to live here. Please help us secure basic economic justice for all Austinites. Sincerely,
The Austin Living Wage Coalition would
