BETTER
BENEFITS COALITION
The BBC stands for the Better Benefits Coalitions, which is a non-profit
coalition of private and public businesses that came together in 1999
to improve the affordability and quality of benefits they provide to their
employees.
The BBC is registered
as an unincorporated, non-profit association in Texas. It is governed
by a 6 to 15 member Board of Directors and managed on a daily basis by
an Executive Director.
BBC
OBJECTIVES
The cost of healthcare benefits to employers is increasing while access
to quality and convenient products and services for employees is decreasing.
Employers need alternatives and input to ensure that their employees have
the best care for the best price. Pursuant to this guiding principle,
the BBC's primary objectives are:
- To exchange information
and share ideas and expertise
- To combine forces
for negotiating leverage (pooling purchasing power)
- To educate the
general workforce and public
- To influence public
dialogue and debate
BBC
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
With health care and pharmacy costs escalating through the 80s and 90s,
employers have joined forces to find more cost effective solutions to
employee benefits. Employer coalitions, because of the greater numbers
of employees they represent, can often negotiate better rates than individual
businesses. Since its inception in 1999, the BBC has worked toward developing
new initiatives for its members, including the introduction of a pharmacy
benefit and the affiliation with other employer coaltions.
Pharmacy
Benefit
In response to rising costs for pharmacy benefits, the BBC negotiated
a superior prescription drug
benefit program to offer to its member organizations at a guaranteed
discount rate. Caremark was selected on the basis of its overall cost,
reputation and extended services. To date three organizations have selected
Caremark as their PBM. Over 5,000 covered members benefit from this association.
Affiliation
with Other Employer Coalitions
The BBC has affiliated with the Texas Business Group on Health because
the TBGH is the recognized voice of Texas business regarding employer-sponsored
health care. Dedicated to community-based business health care coalitions
and employers across the state, TBGH is the guiding influence in health
care policy development. For more information on TBGH refer to www.tbgh.org.
THE
BBC AIMS TO DO MORE
The BBC plans to increase its employer membership and add benefit products
for employees. It expects to play a critical role in providing education
and information for the community - eventually lobbying on issues important
to its members and employees.
There are no limits to the ultimate cost savings, improved benefits and
legislative changes the BBC can create. The BBC aims to demonstrate a
shared vision and voice of concerned employers united to improve employee
benefit solutions.
