Who We Are
In the 1970s and 1980s, the people of the Blackland neighborhood in Austin, Texas, fought to preserve affordable housing in their own backyards. Founded as a result of their efforts in 1983, the Blackland Community Development Corporation (BCDC) has for twenty-five years provided housing to a diversity of low-income households and is proud to host the only neighborhood-created program for homeless families in Texas.
Mission
Our mission is to foster a safe, inclusive community that strives for social equality by preserving and enhancing the stock of affordable housing and providing supportive programs for Blackland residents.
What We Do
- Provide affordable housing to low-income families, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities.
- Provide transitional housing and case management services to homeless and near-homeless families.
- Create innovative, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible housing (please see our 22nd Street Project).
- Promote economic growth that complements the needs of the neighborhood’s residents.
- Foster a sense of community in the Blackland neighborhood.
- Work with other CDCs, housing organizations, the Blackland Neighborhood Center, and other organizations that fulfill complementary functions or that have plans for doing so.
