Workshop Trees

Below are pictures and details about the actual trees to be used during the Bonsai Bridges in 2002 Convention. Click on the small picture to see a larger picture of each tree.


Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestrus)

Grown for bonsai and has gone through at least one Texas summer. Large trunk and branches to choose. Can be carved so bring your tool if you think you might want to carve - a disclaimer will be provided for you to sign. 
Approximately 3+ inch trunk, 28 inches high, 24 inches wide.

In this picture you can see the trees are grown first and then cut back to grow new tops and branches.

This is a sample of one of the workshop trees in Spring of 2001. The workshop on this and the other in November, 2002 will be conducted by Marc Noelander. These trees were obtained from and maintained by Chuck Ware of Jade Gardens.


Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii)

Grown for bonsai, compact, and very tight branched. 
2 inch trunk, 18 inches high, 14 inches wide.

This picture shows how the pines were grown - only one tall leader so that the tree stays compact and many branches. This leader will be cut when the tree is dug. This is fall 2000.

This is an example of one of the workshop trees that will be in November, 2002, conducted by Dennis Makishima.

Japanese Yew (Taxus cuspidata)

Grown for bonsai and good branching to choose from. Carving a possibility. so bring you tool if you think you might want to carve - a disclaimer will be provided for you sign.
2+ inch trunk, 18 inches high, 14 inches wide.

Repotted in Spring 2001 - this is an example of the workshop trees that Marc Noelanders will be conducting. The trees were obtained from and maintained by Chuck Ware of Jade Gardens.


Korean Hornbeam (Carpinus turczaninowii)

Vigorous trees with lots of branching.
1 inch trunk, 14 inches high, 10 inches wide.

This is an example of the hornbeam for the Dennis Makishima workshop in the Fall of 2000 after leaves have dropped. These trees were obtained from and maintained by Joe Wait of Bonsai Exotica.

This is one of the hornbeams in the Spring of 2001 with leaves. Hornbeam, with spring leaves. In pot and ready for workshop styling.


Azalea (Rhododendron indicum)

Grown in Texas for bonsai for 10 years and the blooms are gorgeous.
Approximately 1 inch trunk, 30 inches high, 18 inches wide.

This is an example of one of the workshop azaleas in bloom. The workshop will be conducted by Dennis Makishima. These trees were obtained from and maintained by Bennie Badgett of San Marcos Bonsai.


Sargent Crabapple (Valus sargentii)

Nicely shaped trees that will bear fruit.
Approximately 3/4 inch trunk, 15 inches high, 12 inches wide.

This is an example of the crabapple workshop tree in the Spring of 2000 before it put on leaves. These trees were obtained from and are being maintained by Terry Ward of Persimmon Hill Bonsai. Pat Brodie will conduct this workshop.

Mustang Grapes (Vitis landicans)

Collected and well established. Carving a possibility so bring your tools if you thing you might want to carve - a disclaimer will be provided for you to sign.
Approximately 2+ inch trunk and varying heights.

These are pictures of Mustang Grapes collected by Sam Gonzalez and will be maintained by Gonzalaz Nursery. The new growth on these trees is just from the time of collection so that by the time the Convention is here, they will be quite vigorous. No two are alike, with trunk sizes from 2 1/2 inches and larger, so this is just a sample of some different sizes and styles - there will be 15 to choose from. Marc Noelanders will do the workshop on this tree.

Asian Jasmine (Murraya paniculata)

Nice woody trunks and branched well. Strongly and sweetly scented, bell-shaped whit flowers then small brightly colored berries. Evergreen.

These are examples of the Asian Jasmine - some of the trees are single trunk and some are twin trunk. These will be used during the workshop with Pat Brodie

Kingsville Boxwood (Buxus microphyulla var. kingsville)

These will be a 5-tree saikei, in a natural rock container hand made by Buddy Allen.

This is an example of the rock "tray" (each has been hand made by Buddy Allen of Houston, Tx.) that the Kingsville Boxwoods will be put into to be styled into the Saikei with Pat Brodie.
