Beekeeping Supplies

The beginning beekeeper will need hive equipment, beekeeping gear and bees before he can start his hobby.

The linked pages outline the basic requirements, and further information on additional accessories will be added soon.

Basic equipment can be purchased from a large variety of area or mail order sources. Often more economically priced equipment can be purchased at flea markets or from someone no longer keeping bees. In general, most of the essential equipment can be acquired at a reasonable cost.

It is important to note that previously used hives and frames should always be cleaned thoroughly. Any equipment that is suspected of having housed sick bees should be acquired only with careful consideration since some diseases can persist in the wood of the hive boxes. Some states require burning any hives which have contained bees diagnosed with American Foulbrood, therefore caution should be exercised.
