Top Bar Hives

Top Bar Hives

Also known as the Kenya hive, this unusual hive is being used by more and more beekeepers. The hive box itself is fundamentally different from the standard Langstroth hive.

I got an email from fellow Texan Robert, who has an excellent page about his TOP BAR HIVES. He is the sort of new beekeeper I like to hear about! He designed and built an outstanding looking TBH, complete with vents, viewing panel and dimensions to fit standard equipment if he desired to use frame feeders or whatever. This site is really worth a visit. Thanks for the email Robert.

Here is a good link from Paraguay about TBH's

One of the best sites devoted to Top Bar Hives is done by James Satterfield who has pages devoted to this topic.

A page that shows TBH's being worked with pictures of the top-bars with comb attached is part of John's Beekeeping Notebook. He doesn't suggest they be used by beginners but I think that's just because one has to check the top-bars to make sure they aren't getting attached to the sides.

A wonderful sounding project by Fairview College shows their TBH project in Central America. This site has wonder pictures of TBH's hanging from trees by ropes which is useful in keeping predators or livestock away from the hives. This site is full of pictures so plan to spend some time there.
