Recognizing that 85% of the brain is organized during the first three years of life and that each child is unique …

CEDEN’s Early Childhood Intervention Program strives to ensure that children ages 0–3 years old with a severe developmental delay reach their full potential. Utilizing a comprehensive intervention approach, an interdisciplinary team made up of parents, a service coordinator, therapist or other professional develops an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). Each team member contributes to the IFSP which guides the delivery of services to support the medical, educational, social or emotional needs of each child and family. When a child reaches age 3, transition activities ensure the child continues to receive services in appropriate settings.

Services are provided in the child’s natural environment such as the home, park or daycare center. These services may include:

¨Screening and assessment ¨Child development activities
¨Health and nutrition ¨Infant stimulation
¨Speech, occupational or physical therapy ¨Home visits

In 1997, 271 children were referred to the program and received developmental screenings. Of those, 136 were enrolled for the first time. 194 children received comprehensive services. Families and staff were challenged with children who had significant developmental and/or medical conditions. Some of these conditions include Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Spinal Cord Injury, Hidrocephalus and seizure disorders.
