Alternative Gifts

CESSMAQ, as a committee of the Presbyterian Church of Guatemala, advocates church participation and education. Members of Mission Presbytery visit regularly, and have learned a great deal about the integrity and effectiveness of the development work being done by CESSMAQ.

Beaming Mayan man and woman. As communities identify projects which will improve their standard of living, CESSMAQ works to mobilize the effort. CESSMAQ brings all the parts together to make it happen. One of these parts is the finances. CESSMAQ does not give money to the community, but it does make loans. When the loans are repaid, the funds are loaned again to another project or community. To participate in a project, a community or individual must raise 50% of the cost, then CESSMAQ loans the other 50%.

Help our partners in Guatemala raise money to make these loans. This alternative allows you to provide a thoughtful gift while also helping someone in Guatemala. We will send a card to the person you wish to honor, with information about the donation made on their behalf.

New Hurricane Stan relief
CESSMAQ is leading a hurricane relief effort for 33 of our partner communities. What you can provide.

Pig project
The pig project made small matching loans for Mayan women to purchase a breeding sow. CESSMAQ provided training and technical assistance in caring for the pigs, selling the offspring, and maintaining business records. This project was so successful that local markets were flooded with pigs and pork products! The capital is now being used for other socio-productive projects. More information about the pig project.

Christian and public school education
Most adults in the villages served by CESSMAQ have learned to read in the last 3 years. So, praise God, there is now a great need for Bibles so that families can have one in their home.
Women and children from Mission and Maya Quiche Presbyteries togetherThe government of Guatemala provides elementary education. CESSMAQ encourages this education by distributing school supplies.
  • Spanish-language Bible $5.00
  • Maya-Quiche-language Bible $10.00
  • School supplies $5.00
  • 2-week stipend for local project facilitators trained by CESSMAQ $25.00
Coffee planting and processing
Unfortunately, world coffee prices are at a 100-year low. CESSMAQ is no longer supporting the effort to add more coffee plants or coffee processing plants to their program. More information about the coffee replanting project.
