Charlotte Hains, of First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, Texas, describes her trip to Chuisajcava:

Handwritten journal entry: Guatemala Mission Trip. Leader Rob Mueller Our mission trip began as we clustered at the San Antonio airport, joining hands in prayer. It was the first of many acts we did together on this journey into the highlands of Guatemala.

The purpose of this trip was to become more knowledgeable about the partnership between CESSMAQ (the Evangelical Committee for Service and Support of the Maya Quiche) and Mission Presbytery. We were specifically to help labor in the coffee fields and, by participating, to learn more about the culture and daily life of the local people.

Visitors from the US stand in the back of the pick up Few vehicles find their way to Chuisajcava, a village of ninety Mayan families that would be our home for the next week. From Guatemala City, our group had traveled by bus for two hours to a small town, where we transferred to a smaller vehicle. Even as a seasoned mission traveler, I was surprised at the continuing journey. Most of us had stood in the back of a weathered pick-up truck. A bar on each side and one through the middle provided a grip. We had held tightly for the slow, bumpy ride along a primitive rugged roadway.
