Joyous, excited, barefooted children marked our arrival to the village, eager to see us and to be acquainted. Right away! Throughout the visit, the children had us under constant surveillance, even running through the forest to accompanying us to the coffee fields. They were so swift in their total familiarity with the mountainside! We rose early, but those eager young faces would already be peering through the windows for a peek at us. The four-room school was in dismissal part of the time our group was there. We used two of the rooms for our bedrolls and other belongings. When school reconvened, somehow all the children squeezed into the remaining two classrooms until our departure. The women who cooked for us were up before dawn patting out corn tortillas to assure they had stacks to set before us. We later learned that dishes had been collected from the Mayan households so that our visiting team members each had a cup, dish and spoon.
