Mission - Maya Quiche Presbyteries
Feb 2002. Blessings, blessings, blessings

Certainly one of the most impressive developments for those of us who had been to Guatemala and visited with the Maya Quiche people is the rapid growth in programs we have supported. In July of last year in the area around Tzampoj you could count the number of vegetable gardens on one hand. Now there are 97!! This is the result of just $323 in seed money we sent last year.

A small garden plot with neat rows of vegetables, tucked between a small house and lush jungle. We saw many many pigs that are a direct result of the Pennies for Piggies program that so many churches throughout Mission Presbytery have supported. The lady who we pictured last July with her pig, and who used to send "thank yous" to the groups that donated their pennies, now has sold her pig and bought a male and female to breed. Noe Sam, the Director of CESSMAQ reports that 100% of the loans for pigs have been repaid!!

We saw alternative economic methods springing up with the proud lady at Chuigirondina who had borrowed money from CESSMAQ, purchased chicks, and the day we arrived had sold her first 9 fully grown chickens for a 100% profit - about $2 but of huge significance to her family - and had fully repaid her loan. The committee at Chuigirondina wants to grow chickens commercially and are anxious to draw plans for an ambitious program of nine acres of chicken coops!

Throughout the trip we all thanked God for the patience and understanding that Noe brings to these wonderful, but so totally impoverished people as he fields hundreds of proposals and requests (pleas) for help. The rich blessing in all this is that CESSMAQ has these people thinking. They are organized. They have hope! Time and again the people from the committees would thank us for supporting CESSMAQ.
