Mission - Maya Quiche Presbyteries

Noe Sam and Rob Mueller presenting at the July 2000 Mission Presbytery meetingAfter two weeks touring Mission Presbytery, Texas, Guatemalans Noe Sam and Samuel Sohom shared their observations through a translator:

We came to learn. We saw several mission projects which encourage us to go forward. They give us ideas about how they work. We don't understand their working totally but we can take some of the ideas home to use in our projects. We see there is also poverty here with many problems. It is not the same level that we have but there are problems and poverty here.

We have seen that liturgy within the churches is very formal. They have lost some of that solemnity in churches in Guatemala. Some churches have lost that formality in our country.

We learned there is a lot of order in your meetings. The ideas, proposals and motions that come forward are very concrete and people know how they want to vote without much discussion on the subject.

We have seen a lot of different things here in these churches. We notice that the churches still have a cross inside and outside. We don't have that - either inside or outside. It is like a sacrilege. It is utilized more by the evangelical churches in Guatemala.

Your communion is different - people pass up to the front and dip bread into the wine. We pass the bread and then the wine. [Communion was by intinction at the Presbytery meeting and at Covenant Austin.]

The churches work in unity with different churches.

The high points:
  • Seeing a lot of the brothers and sisters in what they are doing.
  • Developing relationships with a lot of people in person to person activities.
  • We will take back to Guatemala that they are very interested in the work we are doing.
  • People are interested in traveling to Guatemala to help us. New people are interested in coming.
