Replacing the existing variety of coffee which takes seven years to reach maturity with a new variety which reaches maturity in its fourth year and has a much greater yield is one of the CESSMAQ projects which holds great promise for Mayan coffee farmers. |
||||||||
![]() The "old" variety yields 80 to 150 pounds of coffee per plot. The "new" variety yields 10 to 15 times this amount in the same size plot (200 coffee plants shaded by 30 banana trees). The cost of converting from the old to the new variety is approximately $175.00 per plot. This includes the cost of the plants, planting the coffee and bananas to provide shade for the plants, and maintaining them until the first harvest in the third year after planting. |
