Water Purification
en espaņol
Health and personal hygiene training is an important part of the installation of this water purification system. For example, children place their fingerprints on the surface of a petri dish along with a drop of untreated water from their well. They soon see the development of bacteria on the petri dish. After looking at germs through a microscope, children use Play-doh to make their own "germs". Diagram of purification unit, with each component drawn on a sheet of notebook paper, and the papers taped on the wall

Mayan children are shown the water purification unit as it is installed and are given pieces of this "Puzzle" to color and assemble so that it looks like their water purification unit.

Photo of purification unit, showing tanks, PVC piping, and filtersAll the piece parts (with the exception of the roof-mounted water storage tanks) fit on a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood. Contaminated water enters the system through the white filter in the lower right-hand corner of the photo. Ozone gas is added to the water by the ozone generator shown in the upper right-hand corner of the photo. Water then travels through 25 linear feet of pvc pipe to maximize the water's exposure to the ozone gas.

It then is transferred to the stage 1 roof-mounted tank. When ready for further processing, the water is pumped through the two blue filters - one 5 micron and one .5 micron filter for purification. Chlorine is then added to the water and it is pumped back to the roof for storage until it is dispensed at a "filling station" faucet.
