A typical Mayan house, barely a shack with tin roof and gaping wood plank walls, is now flooded
  • Mission Presbytery supports 33 Guatemalan communities through its partnership with CESSMAQ, the social service arm of the Maya Quiche Presbytery in Guatemala.
  • Damage from Hurricane Stan and subsequent flooding have devastated the country and the communities we support.
  • While emergency aid is important, the ongoing needs are tremendous
  • The majority of our friends in Guatemala make a living from farming. The fall-harvest crops were destroyed leaving severe shortages of food, and no work until late spring planting. Hunger and illness are widespread.
  • We are supporting CESSMAQ in their efforts to provide aid to our partner communities, some of which are still unreachable more than two weeks after the tragedy.
  • CESSMAQ needs $70,000 for the relief effort - just over $2000 per community to provide basic food, clothing, medicine and supplies for each village.
  • $25 buys a 100 lb. bag of corn. $160 pays an average farmer's wages for a month. $2100 can rebuild a community.
Simply send a check made out to Mission Presbytery, with "Guatemala Flood Relief" in the memo field. Thank you for your support!

"The situation is still very dire"
Scott Dannemiller relays news from CESSMAQ, November 16: I spoke with director Noe Sam today. He said the situation is still very dire. Their committee is going to meet next week to discuss options for retraining the workforce for new jobs since agriculture will be down for the immediate future.

He’s very concerned about the folks from Pala. Eighty-three families were sent to shelters and still have no permanent spot. There are some serous questions as to whether or not the community can be rebuilt at all. They have looked into land, but nothing seems feasible. He believes it will take 50 cuerdas (plots) to get them all relocated. The cost for this much land is about 2 million quetzals [more than $250,000]. He’s looking at what can be done with the government, but doesn’t have high hopes.

In the meantime, anything we can send is welcome. Seven to nine churches in the presbytery suffered substantial damage. Numerous families still need basic assistance.

CESSMAQ has a lot of decisions to make as to how to best use the money we have sent. I told him we would continue praying and seeing if we could raise some more funds for them.
