CavOILcade Tour - October 1999

By Barbara Baker

Well, another CavOILcade tour has come and gone. For those of you who missed it - SHAME! SHAME! The weather was beautiful and cool. Those attending were: our president, Vic, and first lady Jan, Jay and Ruthie Burks, Connie Spear and sister Deanie, Bob Blackwell, Pat and Jack Bass, Corky and Stan Stanley, Gary and Cheryl Tatro, Hubert Linenberger, Roger and Jo Robinson, Ralph and Louise Parker, Rosella and Al Pringle, Ralph Smoot and friend, Marsh, and Gary and myself.

Thursday night the early arrivals went to Dorothy’s Back Porch. Had good food then watched the fish, turtles and alligator swimming below the porch.

Friday we had our pictures taken and started into some serous food eating as only car people can do. I took two groups of ladies shopping (which did not make husbands happy). At 5:00 p.m. Jerry Bellot and his cajun band started playing. We stopped the music just long enough to eat again and then music and dancing till 10:00.

Saturday, up at an unheard of early hour for the judge’s breakfast and judging of the cars. At 9:00 a.m. we toured to Winnie, the back way. Gary and I went on some roads that we did not know existed, and we were raised there. We stopped at Larry’s Antique Mall and visited the shops. Yes, again we ate. Then it was off to Winnie’s antiques shops. I think all of us left he store owners a little bit richer.

Back to the motel to rest before the awards banquet. During the program we had guest appearances from Miss Kitty, Dolly Parton, Dr. Livingston, Carmen Miranda, Willie Nelson and Harvey Rabbit. Our club brought home a few trophies: Vic a 1st - 1931 Auburn, Al a 2nd - 1914 Franklin and the oldest car registered, Ralph Parker a 2nd - 1931 Ford Roadster, Jay a 2nd - 1959 Ford Sedan, Ralph Smoot a 3rd - Studebaker Avanti, Gary Tatro longest trailered - 1931 Ford Cabriolet, Gary Baker a 1st - 1929 Model A Sedan.

Also from the Austin area were Ken West and Francis Ellis in his old truck which won the Best Unrestored Pre War class, 3rd place to Clyde and Candice Nichols, and 2nd to B. R. Speir & Irene.

With all of us there we still did not win the Jerry Plocar Award for most in attendance. The Evangline Chapter from Louisiana won with 39. If we want this trophy back we will just have to try harder.
