March Winds - Anderson Mill Tour

It was a spectacular sunny spring day on March 22. People started arriving around 11 AM at the Kodosky’s garage for what turned out to be a pretty nice day-tour, except for one of our guests; more on that later.

In attendance there were 28 members and 7 guests in 18 antique cars and 1 modern car. The modern car was a Mercedes convertible driven by Scott Isensee’s parents who were out-of-town visitors.

We left the garage and headed toward the restaurant, which we all know is why we have these day-tours each month. If we get to eat we are all happy. If we get to eat good food we are happier! We were all happier that day. Apparently, we were a tad late for lunch so we lost our private room, but Mesa Rosa was able to put several tables together and accommodate all 35 of us without a problem.

Once everyone had their fill we started on the road tour. We headed toward the small city of Volente, traveling on Anderson Mill road. We stop at The Anderson Mill Museum for a guided tour. Some of the cars were able to fit into the driveway and the others parked in the lot in the back. After we had the parking situation in hand we meet Martha, the president of the Garden Club that maintains the grounds. Martha took several people at a time and told us the story of the Mill.

After spending an hour or so at the Mill we traveled around the east side of Lake Travis in a slow caravan with the 20’s and 30’s cars leading the tour. Since we were taking those hairpin turns at 10 to 15 MPH we realized that we should have sped up to take the curves safely at the posted speed limits. All in all there were some beautiful views of the lake and cliffside. The lake was down over 15 feet so there were plenty of sandy beaches exposed.

On the return trip, when we reached Hwy 620 and Hwy 183 some people pealed off and went home. Several others continued to the Kodosky’s house and had some cookies and much needed water.

After everyone went home I checked my email and I read a message from Phil and Esther Knapp, guests on the tour. (I’m trying to get them to join our club.) Phil said that one of their wheels came loose and they had to pull over. Carl and Silvia Fransen stopped and gave Phil a ride home to get his trailer, while Royce Richmond stayed with Esther and the car. Dan Bos, a friend of mine that I’m trying to get to join our club, also stopped and help direct traffic around the Lincoln Zephyr. After closer examination Phil was happy to report that the only damage to the Zephyr was a slightly bent rim. Phil and Esther said they had a great time spending their 51st anniversary on the tour even though they had some trouble. They thanked Carl, Silvia, Royce and Dan for helping them get their car home and said that we had a really nice club. I’ll give them a few more days before I bug them again about joining a “really nice club”!
