At the August 11th Flight meeting, I presented an idea (approved by the board) to create a "Longhorn
Flight 38 Service History" database. Those at the meeting seemed to think it was a good idea and
I've already had some responses. I got the idea when looking at the roster the other day, and it dawned on me that it would be interesting if we built a history of our members' combat experience and aircraft flown in their careers. In today's world, there seems to be more interest in collecting information/history of military members. We are now frequently reminded of the fact that the number those individuals who fought in WWII have had their last flight. Those Korean Era guys aren't getting any younger and will be the next group folks talk about. Eventually the Vietnam guys will be the "senior combatants". The plan is to collect a bit of information about our members to be listed in a table on the Flight website so all could view the results. To begin with, I think it would be interesting to have a way to show the total number of "Years of Military Service" the flight has given to the Country. Additionally, the table will show a listing of the aircraft each member flew and also any combat tours. Again this is a bit of history that will be lost if not collected and noted down somewhere. I think it was the VFW (but could have been some other group) that said we have to tell our stories or they are lost. Information already provided by less than 20 of our members has show those folks had a total service of almost 500 years, combat experience in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada and Iraq in a wide variety of aircraft! (What has been done so far can be seen at our web site: http://www.main.org/daedalians/ ) Right below the link to our flight experience, there is a link to a survey that you can fill out and send to me either by e-mail at ddelong@austin.rr.com or regular mail to Darrel DeLong, 8701 Young Lane, Austin, TX 78737. The format of the information on the website is only the draft and a work in progress. To make this a true picture of the Flight, we need everyone's input. Please check out the website. I look forward to hearing from you.
