The first hour of the program features performances by international children.

Texas-based and nationally-known performer and songwriter Joe McDermott has graciously agreed to perform a benefit concert featuring his popular children's music. All proceeds from this event will be used to purchase food for the Chiquimula Feeding Center in eastern Guatemala that is providing relief to malnourished Guatemalan children and their families as they endure the country's worst drought in 70 years.

About Joe McDermott

This award-winning children's entertainer became an art teacher after graduating from the University of Texas in 1982, then went on to open his own preschool, The Phoenix School, in Central Austin. While teaching, he discovered that children were "an unending source of inspiration for songwriting." Children's music is a full-time focus for Joe McDermott. "What I love about this genre is how open it is to expression." McDermott's artistic training helps him create visually rich songs that evoke emotions in "people of all sizes." He's been called "The maestro of imagination" for his creative approach and appeal.

The Chiquimula Feeding Center

A group of Austin adoptive families of Guatemalan children from Central Presbyterian Church have organized a benefit concert series, "Musica para los Ninos de Guatemala," to support the efforts of the Chiquimula Feeding Center in eastern Guatemala.

According to UNICEF, almost 50% of Guatemala's children are chronically malnourished. A diet of little more than tortillas does permanent damage-hindering brain development and stunting growth, among other disabling effects.

This chronic problem of malnutrition has become acute as Guatemala experiences its worst drought in 70 years. Church sponsored Feeding Centers in Guatemala are providing relief in this crisis.

In lieu of ticket sales for the Joe McDermott concert, a monetary donation will be requested at the event. All proceeds will be sent to the Chiquimula Feeding Center to buy food. Feeding Center staff donate their time, and no salaries or other overhead will be taken from the donations.
