President's Message

The year 2000 is history. It was both exciting and challenging for us. (No I'm not talking about the election.) The Libraries for the Future task force wrapped up its findings and conclusions in a formal presentation to the city council in September. The presentation was very well received and we should see some positive action in the coming year. The mayor is expected to announce the formation of a follow-up task force in the near future. Its job will be to monitor and advise on the implementation of the recommendations made by the original task force. Members of the Friends will again be active participants in this process. In this vein, focus group meetings will be held in the various branch libraries. If you wish to get on the participants' list, check with your branch librarian for time and date.

This year is also the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Austin Public Library. We will be participating in many of the events scheduled throughout the year to highlight the founding. The kick-off was a breakfast on the 16th of February. This will be followed by the announcement of the new Library Star Card later in the month. Board member Kim Lindros will be one of the judges selecting the final design. There will be events at each of the branch libraries throughout the coming year to celebrate that branch's unique roll in the neighborhood it serves. Watch for announcements on these and of other events in the coming months. Board members John-Michael Cortez and Quentin Fennessy are serving on the anniversary committee.

All in all it appears to be an exciting year for the library and the Friends. Join in.
