Next GENA Neighborhood Meeting: Monday, March 28th at 6:45 pm at San Jose Community Center

Join your neighbors at the GENA neighborhood meeting on Monday, January 23rd at the San Jose Church Community Center. The meeting will begin at 6:45 pm. Come early to "meet and greet" your friends and neighbors.

Note: Only current residents who have been members of GENA for at least ten days prior to the meeting can vote on neighborhood association issues.

GENA would like to thank San Jose Church for providing the use of the Parish Hall for our meetings.

Traffic and Speeding Problems Continue in the Neighborhood

The Galindo Neighborhood Association is glad that traffic calming is being installed on our busier streets. We're committed to keeping our streets safe - protecting both drivers and pedestrians alike. The speed limit on all neighborhood streets is now 25 mph, so please drive carefully while on residential streets.

South First Designated as Future Transportation Corridor, Most Properties Designated VMU

The City of Austin has designated South First Street as a Future Transit Corridor, which means the Vertical Mixed Use (VMU) ordinance applies to most properties along South First Street.

The GENA executive committee proposes that all properties taking advantage of the relaxed standards use 60% of median multifamily income as the basis for determining low income eligibility for the development.

Neighborhood Plan Update

The Galindo Elementary Neighborhood started the neighborhood planning process in October of last year. The city has combined the neighborhoods of Barton Hills, South Lamar, Zilker and Galindo into one group, the South Lamar Combined Neighborhood Plan in order to streamline the process.

The planning process includes an evaluation of the neighborhood’s strengths and weaknesses and an examination of current transportation, land use, parks and open space, and current zoning uses. The group meets every month and the planning process last about a year and a half. The plan will eventually be sent to the city council for final approval.

The Galindo Planning area has been meeting separately as a group to write our vision and goals for our neighborhood. We’ve met twice to discuss and draft visions and goals. A list of neighborhood characteristics we would like to see in the future was the starting point for the draft goals below.

  • Maintain neighborhood diversity and preserve single-family housing (infill options) while maintaining housing affordability.
  • Provide more parks and open space via trails, greenbelt and recreation areas.
  • Sidewalks and bike lane improvements with increased transit options. Speeding traffic and cut-through traffic are also an issue.
  • Redevelopment of Oltorf and South First will emphasize neighborhood services and include residential and mixed use residential and commercial development.

School quality, environmental concerns and flood plain issues will also be included in the neighborhood’s goals. We are now working on evaluating the current land use and potential for development and change in the zoning and use of Oltorf, South First, Cardinal Lane and the corner of Ben White and South First.

The City of Austin has developed a very informative site on the South Lamar Combined Neighborhood Planning Area, with meeting notices, neighborhood planning contacts, and many other helpful resources.
