TO VISIT THE LIBERAL ARTS ACADEMY MAGNET

We encourage interested eighth-graders to visit the Liberal Arts Academy Magnet on a school day before Spring Break. The parent and the student should agree on a morning and a second choice when no major work will be missed at the middle school. Next, the family books an appointment to visit from 8:00 until noon by phoning 414-5817. On the morning of the visit, the student arrives at the Magnet office to be met by a greeter with a schedule that reflects the magnet experience. Students are escorted from core class to core class, where they participate freely, while observing the staff, students, and atmosphere of the magnet and of Johnston High School. Parents or other designated drivers pick up students in the Magnet office at noon. At that time, families may talk with an administrator if they choose.

Special requests can be handled when the family calls to book the visit.

REMEMBER THESE STEPS

1. Pick 2 alternative dates during the spring semester before Spring Break.
2. Phone the Liberal Arts Academy Magnet at 414-5817 to book the visit.
3. Check into the Magnet office at 8:00 a.m. on the day of the visit. When you check in, present a copy of your most recent report card and the personal information page of your application.
4. With help of staff and students, follow the assigned schedule of sample schedule of core classes.
5. When you have completed your schedule, meet your transportation back to middle school in the magnet office.
6. If you have not completed your application before you visit, be sure to complete the personal information page before leaving JHS.

FINAL INTERVIEW & ACCEPTANCE

As soon as the magnet administrators receive the general information sheet, a photocopy of the fall report card, and the two teacher recommendations, the student and family will receive an invitation to a final interview and planning day. On that day, the student will do written work, talk to -magnet staff- and - students - and complete a magnet ninth-grade choice sheet. We will mail acceptance letters within two weeks of the final interview.
