JHS Drama
The Johnston Drama department is a completely production-oriented program--everything the students do leads to a final production. Students also participate in improvisation exercises in order to warm up get the creativity flowing. Varsity Theater teacher Rick Garcia puts a lot of emphasis on constant improvement, removing yourself from "yourself", to create original, believeable characters The importance of ettiquette is also stressed.
\par Under the direction of Garcia and Junior Varsity teacher George Adkinson, the Johnston theater department produces some of the best plays and musicals in the district. Past productions include "The Skin of Our Teeth","Rosencratz and Guildenstern Are Dead","The Hands of Its Enemy","Reckless","Exit the King","To Kill a Mockingbird","The Rise and Rise of Daniel Rocket"and "The Boys Next Door." The most recent production was "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." Theater at Johnston provides a great opportunity for students to express themselves in a positive outlet. A strong background in theater gives students the self-confidence they need to perform well in both their studies and in life.
October 26 through 29 the Varsity Theater Company will present a double comedy playbill beginning with Tina Howe's "Approaching Zanzibar," directed by Rick Garcia, and concluding with Don Nigro's "The Curate's As You Like It," directed by George Adkinson. November 18 and 19, under the direction of UT Intern Jennifer Bryan, the Freshman Theater Company will perform a play with a title that is to be announced.
