The Mahomet (Sycamore Springs) School

The early-day school at Mahomet began in Sycamore Springs neighborhood east of present-day Mahomet. After a fire destroyed the old school building there, B. H. Stewart deeded two acres of land on August 31, 1898 to "Citizens of Union School District #69" for school and church purposes (Volume 33, Page 85, DRBC) and the school was moved to Mahomet where a new building was constructed. In later years the school was listed in county records as Sycamore Common School District #69, and was consolidated with the Bertram District in the 1940s with part of the students going to Bertram and some to Briggs.

Some of the teachers who taught at Mahomet are Ella Cummings and Avis Bailey, 1912; W. E. Faith, J. N. Faith, and Maggie Fewell, 1930-1932; Cora Lee Faubion, 1931-1933, 1935; Raynor Burch, 1931-1932; Willis H. Hiles, 1933-1934; Goldie Purcell, 1933; Mrs. Willis H. Hiles, 1934; Merele Faubion, 1934; P. K. Durrett, 1935-1940; Frances Lewis 1936; Roberta McCormick, 1936-1940; Elizabeth Sparks, 1937; Vadena Price, 1938; Era Gaulden, 1939; H. B. Asher, 1940-1941; Mrs. Irene Arnold, 1941-1943; Mrs. Al Ray, 1942-1943; and Maude McCormick 1944.

Postscript: Today the community includes the Mahomet Christian Church, the Mount Horeb Masonic Lodge, and the Mahomet Cemetery. The church and tabernacle are at the last location of the old Sycamore Springs School. The first school that burned down was to the south on Burnet County Road 284 where it crosses Sycamore Springs. The road is known as Williamson County Road 208 at that point since the school was just across the line in Williamson County.
