Supplies for Kolti, India from Central Texas

Mahomet Christian Church and Bertram Christian Church shared some supplies with a sister community in Kolti, India. Kolti is much like the Mahomet community was 150 years ago, considering the Texas hill country is quite different than the Himalayan foothills of India. An early Mahomet resident, B. H. Stewart wrote: "In 1854 a small log house, 14x16 feet was about one mile West of Gabriel Mills for a school house and church. The floor was of black dirt, the seats were made of logs split open in the center, the rough splinters being hewn off with a broad-axe; the roof was of oak boards, split with a froe and mallet. The first school this writer ever attended was in that humble building."

The following is a touching story from October of 2014 when Leah Renold and John Davenport friended the people of the village of Kolti in India and shared some supplies with them.

Leah Renold

Leah Renold is a historian of South Asia who offers courses on the History of India and Gandhi and Nonviolence at Texas State University. She received her doctorate in Modern South Asian History from the University of Texas at Austin (1999). In 2005 Oxford University Press published her first book, A Hindu Education: The Early Years of Banaras Hindu University, which explores the complex inter-relationships between Hindu traditions, Hindu-Muslim relations, education, and colonial policy during the Indian independence movement. Her current research includes work on environmental and religious history, myth as a means of knowing in South Asia, and Mahatma Gandhi. Dr. Renold has lived in India for over seven years and directs the Texas State Faculty-Led Study Abroad in India. She is the advisor for the South Asian Students Association.

John Davenport

John Davenport serves as the pastor of both Mahomet Christian Church and First Christian Church of Bertram. Previously John served as pastor to both urban and rural Christian (Disciples of Christ) and Presbyterian congregations from 1972 to his retirement in 2006. He received his doctorate in Biblical Studies from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1973 followed by post-doctoral work at Tubingen University in Germany. For thirteen years he taught biblical studies, philosophy, and world religions (both full and part time) at Central Texas universities.

The church is located at 10451 FM243 East about 11 miles East of Bertram and 3 miles West of 183 near the Williamson County line in far south eastern Burnet County. The church site was formerly the location of the Sycamore Springs School that operated from 1898 to 1944.
