HISTORY The Mayfair Dance Club was begun in Austin in 1940. With a small membership limited to 100 couples, most of the early history of the club is lost with the passage of time. Location of the early dances is one of the things unknown to those in the club today. The Constitution and By-Laws of the club affirm that The Mayfair Dance Club was founded as a formal ballroom dance club and that its purpose was to provide a venue for congeniality and dancing to orchestral music. In decades past, The Mayfair officers made agreement with the historic Austin Club, 119 East 9th Street, as site for The Mayfair dances. Does this relationship date to the founding of The Austin Club in 1948? Possibly. Passed down to current members is the statement of its longest participating members that "Mayfair" has "always" been with The Austin Club. |
