THE BULLETIN BOARD |
| HAPPY HANUKKAH HAPPY NEW YEAR |
For our December meeting it is time to just have fun. On December 14th we will have our annual chapter Christmas Dinner Dance. Hope to see you there. I want to thank those of you who donated a little extra with their dinner checks at the last dinner. You have made a difference in our bottom line. Thanks!! This Fall we are asking you to renew your membership for 2006 in the Austin Chapter of MOAA. Our dues for 2006 are going up slightly due to increases in costs to support our dinners, speakers and youth awards. Officer dues will be $17 and widows will be $12. Donations above these amounts are appreciated. COL Ben Meharg, VP for membership, also reminds us that we need to renew our National MOAA memberships. |
When you do, make sure that you indicate that your Chapter is
Austin so that we can get credit for your membership. If you are a National
MOAA member and the label on this newsletter does not say "NM"
please provide COL Meharg with your MOAA number for his records. Each of you can be a recruiter. When you meet a fellow retired officer in the area invite him/her to our dinner meeting and to join AMOAA. Thank you very much for your interest and support of our chapter. See you on Dec 14th and Happy Holidays. OUR DANCE BAND-- WEDNESDAY, 14 DECEMBER, 2005 EVENTS FOR DECEMBER There will not be a Board Meeting in December 19 December-ROWC-Luncheon See Page 4 for further details-sounds like a good program. |

AUSTIN MILITARY HISTORY
Austin Military Officers should know about Austin military history. Austin High School, near the shores of Town Lake and Mopac, is on the location of Camp Sanders, the 1865 post of the 6th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, one of the regiments in Custer's Third Cavalry Division in the "Army of Occupation of Texas" after the Civil War. The 6th Cavalry was commanded by Brigadier General Samuel D. Sturgis. Major General George A. Ouster's headquarters was in a building, now the Arno Nowotny Building, on the University of Texas "Little Campus" at the southwestern corner of 1-35 and Martin Luther King Boulevard. [Edit note-These historical insights are contributed by COL Sel Graham.]-------- Let every nation know. whether it: wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty. John F. Kennedy ---COME TO THE HOLIDAY DINNER DANCE-- |
EXCERPTS [from Officer Review-Dec., 2005) A permanent U.S. uniformed services identification card became available in September for all eligible family members and survivors age 75 and over of deceased service members. Currently, uniformed services retirees are the only persons who receive a
permanent ID card. Beneficiaries currently in possession of a valid ID card
should obtain the new permanent ID card within 90 days of expiration. |
| -FROM MOAA LEGISLATIVE
UPDATE-23 NOV.,2005
"There's some potential that conferees could be called back next week to finish up negotiations on the FY2006 Defense Authorization Bill................MOAA is thankful for our members strong grassroots support, but it can all go to waste if we don't make one strong, final push. If you haven't yet responded to MOAA's Legislative alerts on pending Defense Authorization Bill issues, please do so now. If you've already done that, please "go the extra mile" and send one more message to your legislators-because volume definitely counts. There are several current alerts posted on MO's website, summarized below: "Retain Key Issues in Defense Bill" .................Now, House and Senate Armed Services Committee leaders must convene a conference ....to hammer out a compromise on hundreds of provisions that differ between the two bills, including important differences concerning SBP, concurrent receipt, and Guard/Reserve Health Care. "Sign SBP Discharge Petition" The Senate passed version of the DAB includes Senator Nelson's amendment to implement 30-year- paid-up SBP coverage and to end the deduction of VA survivor benefits from SBP annuities when the member's death is caused by military service. Both provisions would take effect Oct 1, 2005. Unfortunately, the House version does not contain either provision. In response, Rep. Edwards introduced a discharge petition last week to force a house vote on H.R. 808 which would accomplish the same thing as Sen. Nelson's amendment. MOAA has established a special alert to urge House members to sign Rep. Edward's SBP discharge petition. "Don't cut Medicare/Tricare Payments" The Senate-approved budget reconciliation package includes a provision that would reverse a 4.4% reduction in payments to Doctors, now scheduled for January. In place of the reduction, the Senate bill would substitute a 1% payment increase. The House version lets the cuts take effect. Visit http://capwiz.Gom/moaa/home/ to send MOAA messages on all three of these issues or call your Senators-Representative. |
