FLY THE FLAG
THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
It's hard to believe but my year as President of AMOAA is quickly drawing to a close. At our next meeting we will install the new slate of officers for the 2006-2007 year. The installation will be conducted by our special guest and speaker. Brigadier General Howard T. Prince, II, U.S. Army, retired.
I want to extend my personal thanks to the nominating committee, consisting of COL Maurice Quigley, USA; LTC Harold Hampton, U; COL Fred Bangasser, USA, for volunteering their time and effort for this highly important task Organizations such as ours depend upon volunteers to keep it viable, We must spread the time commitments around and not always come back to the same core cadre, so I encourager all of you, no matter what your age, to stay involved. We are still looking for a First VP for Programs. There is still time to step up to the plate and help. AMOAA is important both for the local military officer community, but also for the impact it can have at the National level. I have had a great time being your President during the 2005-2006 year and I intend to stay involved although for the next two years it cannot be as an officer, due to another organizational commitment.

The following is the slate of officers as approved at the last dinner meeting and to be installed on May 17:

President LTC Jerome [Jay] Howard, USAF
1st VP (Programs) (No Nominee)

Austin Military History Austin military officers need to know Austin Military History. The Texas State Capitol contains much military history. The Texas battle flag at the Battle of San Jacinto hangs in the Senate Chamber. The San Jacinto battle flag was brought to Texas by Colonel Sidney Sherman who commanded General Sam Houston's 2nd Regiment of Texas Volunteers, the left wing of the attack on April 21,1839. The flag probably was painted by James H. Beard. It was given to Sherman's Kentucky volunteers by Katherine Sherman, the colonel's wife. The flag is made of white silk with the painted figure of a partially bare-breasted woman grasping in one hand a sword over which is draped a streamer with the words "LIBERTY OR DEATH".

Just inside the South entrance of the Capitol is a plaque honoring the officers killed in the Mexican War. In the gift shop in the Capitol Extension are Texas military history books. A visit to the military history aspects of the Capitol is warranted.

PROGRAM

Our distinguished visitor has an equally distinguished resume. Editor freely admits to surprise, after reading of the breath of his studies and accomplishments, to learn that he is a clinical psychologist, but not just an ordinary one. We can hope that even in the limited time he will have, after installing our new officers, he will take the time to tell us something about his Military career, other than just the bare facts afforded by his Bio. This promises to be an interesting presentation. Some of you may have crossed paths with the General in the course of your own careers. COME AND WELCOME GENERAL [Dr.] PRINCE. LET'S GET HIM TO JOIN OUR LOCAL CHAPTER

NEW MILITARY SITE??????????

As you may remember from Austin Military History Updates, Mt. Bonnell has played a part in this history, for many years, and in many ways. Working through the West Point Society of Central Texas, COL Selden Graham has been campaigning for official recognition of this landmark. Designation of Mt. Bonnell as a Military Site would have to be done by the Texas State Legislature. This would include the placement of a bronze plaque at the site, informing the citizens of Austin and the State, of the reasons for this honor. Let's support this.

10 Web Sites every Military Spouse
Should Know

By Janet Parley
April 2006 Online

As military spouses, we often find ourselves having to
know a little something about practically everything at any given time. Or, at least, we have to know where to go to get that knowledge. In the old days, we either relied on the chain of command or on other spouses for any nuggets of wisdom to help make our lives easier. Thankfully, times have changed.

Useful information is readily available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It may be April, but don't be fooled. Whether you want to find a new job, figure out how to decipher your military leave and earnings statement, locate a doctor within your community or simply meet other spouses, you'll find the following eclectic list of military-spouse-friendly Web sites worthy of being added to your personal list of favorites.

Military One Source. A relatively new online presence, Military One Source provides you with around-the-clock, toll-free information and referral telephone service on an incredible variety of topics. This site seems to represent the long-overdue consolidation of a number of resources and should certainly be one that you explore and one whose address you share with other spouses.

Military Spouse Resource Center. Want to find a new job? Continue your education? Learn about your next duty station? You can do it all at this site. A powerful tool, Miispouse.org is living proof that DoD and the Department of Labor are striving to make your personal and professional lives easier despite the challenges you often face as a mobile military spouse.

TRICARE. You can't escape it. Health care is an issue that you will deal with your entire life whether you are a military spouse, family member, or a retiree (read: civilian).
