I want to extend my personal thanks to the nominating committee, consisting of COL Maurice Quigley, USA; LTC Harold Hampton, U; COL Fred Bangasser, USA, for volunteering their time and effort for this highly important task Organizations such as ours depend upon volunteers to keep it viable, We must spread the time commitments around and not always come back to the same core cadre, so I encourager all of you, no matter what your age, to stay involved. We are still looking for a First VP for Programs. There is still time to step up to the plate and help. AMOAA is important both for the local military officer community, but also for the impact it can have at the National level. I have had a great time being your President during the 2005-2006 year and I intend to stay involved although for the next two years it cannot be as an officer, due to another organizational commitment.

Austin Military History Austin military officers need to know Austin Military History. The Texas State Capitol contains much military history. The Texas battle flag at the Battle of San Jacinto hangs in the Senate Chamber. The San Jacinto battle flag was brought to Texas by Colonel Sidney Sherman who commanded General Sam Houston's 2nd Regiment of Texas Volunteers, the left wing of the attack on April 21,1839. The flag probably was painted by James H. Beard. It was given to Sherman's Kentucky volunteers by Katherine Sherman, the colonel's wife. The flag is made of white silk with the painted figure of a partially bare-breasted woman grasping in one hand a sword over which is draped a streamer with the words "LIBERTY OR DEATH". Just inside the South entrance of the Capitol is a plaque honoring the officers killed in the Mexican War. In the gift shop in the Capitol Extension are Texas military history books. A visit to the military history aspects of the Capitol is warranted. BIRTHDAYS IN THE MONTH of MAY

month-l:00 PM. BRIDGE NEW MILITARY SITE?????????? As you may remember from Austin Military History Updates, Mt. Bonnell has played a part in this history, for many years, and in many ways. Working through the West Point Society of Central Texas, COL Selden Graham has been campaigning for official recognition of this landmark. Designation of Mt. Bonnell as a Military Site would have to be done by the Texas State Legislature. This would include the placement of a bronze plaque at the site, informing the citizens of Austin and the State, of the reasons for this honor. Let's support this. |
