LET US GIVE THANKS!!!!!
Special days of observation in NOVEMBER

     8 NOV-ELECTION DAY
      10 NOV-US MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY
          11 NOV-VETERANS DAY-formerly Armistice Day
             24 NOV-THANKSGIVING DAY
THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
All I can say about our Oct 19th speaker is WOW! MGEN Meloy's presentation on "What is a Veteran" was superb and inspirational. I know Chat I took notes, as well as several others, so that we can use his talk with other groups, particularly with youth groups who today often don't know or understand what a veteran is. Thanks again to Col. Graham for arranging this program and for Mary Kelso taking care of our monthly birthdays and putting out our great newsletter.
It was great to see such an outstanding turnout for our October meeting-we had an attendance of 110. We had, however, a number of last minute attendees who did not have reservations that had us scrambling for tables and dinners. While we can usually handle a couple of extras, please call your Service Rep with your reservations if at all possible. Our dinner costs are going up and we are having a tough time breaking even. The cost of the open bar, which is not supposed to start until 6:30, but seems to be getting earlier every month, is starting to get beyond budget. The Board of Directors is reviewing costs and may have to increase the cost of the meal. In the meantime if you would to help out your AMOAA Chapter, we are always open to donations to help with programs. You can round out your $18 dinner check to $20 or add a little to your annual AMOAA dues.
This Fall we are asking you to renew your membership for 2006 in the Austin Chapter of MOAA. Our dues for 2006 are going up slightly due to increases in costs to support our dinners, speakers and youth awards. Officer dues will be $17 and widows will be $12. Donations above these amounts are appreciated. While AMOAA renewals are not due until Dec 31st, please plan to get your renewals in before the Christmas Season. One of our objectives this year is to get 100% renewals and to grow our Chapter with 10 new members. Every new member before Nov. 30th will earn AMOAA some cash from National.
COL Ben Meharg, VP for membership, also reminds us that we need Co renew our National MOAA memberships. When you do, make sure that you indicate that your Chapter is Austin so that we can get credit for your membership. If you are a National MOAA member and the label on this newsletter does not say "NM" please provide COL Meharg with your MOAA number for his records.
On October 5th I attended the dedication ceremony of the "Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery" at Killeen, Texas. The keynote speaker was James A. Baker, III, former US Secretary of State, with comments from the Honorable Rick Perry. Governor of Texas, and Congressmen John Edwards and John Carter. This cemetery is the result of joint endeavor between the State of Texas and the Federal Veterans Administration. The land was donated by Ft. Hood, built with Federal funds and will be run by the Texas Veterans Land Board. This facility is beautiful and will open officially in December, 2006. If you are up that way [about5 miles south of Killeen on HWY 195) it is a must to stop and visit. The Armed Forces Flags on the Memorial Plaza were all provided by various veterans groups. The Austin Navy League presented the Navy flag. This is designed to be a place of honor for Texas veterans (no charge], their spouses and dependent children. This facility is the first of a planned six Texas Veterans Cemeteries. Currently under planning is a facility in Mission. Texas [opening 2007) and another in Abilene (opening 20DB).     Each of you can be a recruiter. When you meet a fellow retired officer in the area invite him/her to our dinner meeting and to join AMOAA. Thank you very much for your interest and support of our chapter. See you on November 16th at our next meeting. P.S. Don't forget to mark your calendars for the annual Christmas Dance on DECEMBER 14TH.

James D. Brother-ton, CAPT, USN [ret] AMOAA President

MEET OUR SPEAKER

    Austin Councilwoman, Jennifer Kim
Councilwoman Jennifer Kim was one of the most popular choices by the members of AMOAA on the suggestion sheets submitted at the May meeting for speaker at some future meeting. By popular demand, we have her as our speaker on November 16th. Mark your calendars.
Councilwoman Kirn's parents were civilians working for the Department of Defense. She was born in Los Angeles but moved with her parents all over the world^Japan, Korea, Germany-even Houston, Texas where she graduated from high school.
She has a Political Science degree, magna cum laude, from Texas A&M University. She also has a Masters degree in Public Affairs from Princeton.
An interesting detail not in any resume: Her grandfather was a fighter pilot in the Chinese Air Force and flew with the United States Flying Tigers during World War II. [Were any USAF members with the Flying Tigers?)
Her goal on the Austin City Council is to find ways for our city to achieve better results through its investments and policies. Examples are: buying instead of leasing , urging foundations to invest in Austin, committing to small business contracts and a revolving loan program.
All Navy members. Now Hear This: She is a novice rower.
AMOAA is very fortunate to have Councilwoman Kim to speak at our November 16, 2005 dinner meeting. Please be there to give her a big Austin, Texas welcome.

When one door closes, another door opens; but: we often look so long and so regretfully at the closed door chat we do not see the ones chat open. Alexander Graham Bell

Austin Military History

Austin Military Officers should know about Austin Military history. The University of Texas at Austin is known for its song, "The Eyes Of Texas are upon you". These words were inspired by President Robert E. Lee of Washington College, now Washington and Lee University. Yes, he was the famous Confederate General in the Civil WAR. President Lee would habitually warn his college students, "The eyes of the South are upon you". The President of the University of Texas was a good friend and admirer of President Lee. He repeated Lee's warning to his own students, using the word "Texas" instead of "the South'. A student put these words to the tune of "I've been working on the railroad", and the rest is history. When this University of Texas song is sung , General Robert E. Lee should receive credit for contributing the first words.

When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. Mark Twain

LEGISLATIVE THOUGHTS
By Carlos Higgins, Legislative Officer -
 THEM GOLDEN YEARS
It's MOAA now. We've changed our name, trying to recruit younger folks into the MO membership. That's because we're not only a military group, we're pretty much a senior citizen group. Political and health issues near and dear to most senior citizens affect most of us. So that's what this column is mostly about-senior issues. And if you're not quite ready to be branded as a senior citizen, just you wait. If you are not yet a senior citizen, you're probably among the 78 million baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964), who will begin to turn 60 in 2006.
As many of you know, I am a member of the Texas Silver-Haired legislature and the Silver-Haired Congress. Each of these organizations recommends and advocates for changes in laws that can make those remaining "golden" years more livable for aging senior citizens.
Another major step in that effort is the once every ten years event, the White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA). This event, attended by delegates from all over the United States, is held to develop recommendations for the President and Congress on issues, policy and research in the field of aging.
Past WHCoAs have led to key aging programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, the Older Americans Act, the Supplemental Security Income Program, Social Security Reforms, and establishment of the National Institute on Aging.
Past conferences also led to creation of a national nutrition program for older persons, and the establishment of the national aging network.
The WHCoA Policy Committee is made up of 17 members, appointed by the President and Congress. In turn, this committee selected many of the individuals who will serve as delegates. Delegates will be asked to make recommendations to the President and Congress, to help guide aging policies for the next decade and beyond.
The Policy Committee included me among the delegates they selected. They also voted to adopt as the theme for the conference "The Booming Dynamics of Aging From Awareness to Action". (I would have made it something more like "The Road to Genentopia-Potholes and All.)

THE CONFERENCE THIS YEAR WILL BE HELD DECEMBER 11 TO 14, 2005, AT THE MARRIOTT WARDMAN PARK HOTEL IN WASHINGTON, DC . IT'S HARD TO PREDICT WHAT MIGHT COME OUT OF THIS CONFERENCE, BUT, AS YOUR MAN ON THE SCENE, I'LL BE PLEASED TO REPORT BACK TO YOU WHAT SEEMS TO ME TO BE THE HIGH (AND ANY LOW) POINTS.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE NOTE-We currently have an ongoing member- ship drive in concert with the National Organization (MOAA). You can help a great deal by renewing or extending your National Membership early (before November 30, 2005). Please note with your renewal that you are a member of the Austin, Texas Chapter.

AT THANKSGIVING,
we gather together with family, friends,
and those who are present
in our hearts to give thanks
for the food before us,
the year behind us,
and the love that surrounds us all.

May your Thanksgiving
be filled with quiet moments,
happy traditions,
and the special joys
of love and family.
                                  Amen

AUSTIN MILITARY HISTORY
Austin Military need to know Austin Military History. Austin is the location of Custer's first Stand. Austin was Major General George Armstrong Custer's first peacetime assignment after the Civil War ended in 1865. He and his wife Libby enjoyed picnics at the top of Mount Bonnell. He would have the 6th Cavalry Regimental Band present at these picnics to play music. The Custer's favorite piece was "The Anvil Chorus" which would reverberate through the Austin hills. As Libby later wrote, "the sound descended through the valley grandly". Now, that was a real military picnic! And it all happened on top of Mount Bonnell.
(The public does not know about this because the City of Austin denied a historical marker on Mount Bonnell about this interesting bit of military history.)

MEETING OF THE BOARD-After a long discussion of the organization's finances.  Today, it was the consensus that the price of our monthly dinners must be raised beginning the first of the year. Instead of our long standing rate of $18, it will increase to $20. The Christmas-Holiday dinner dance will increase to $25. The cost of the band has increased, and the bar will remain open for the evening. Anyone who has purchase! a drink "out" should realize what a bargain that is. And that will be a formal evening.
