THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
  Chapter President's Symposium 2007
Each year, MOAA hosts a Chapter President's Symposium in a different region of the country. Grapevine Texas, near Dallas, was the site of the 10th annual Symposium this year. The regional symposium brought together council and chapter leaders from 13 states for two days of workshops, personal affairs instruction and training on chapter management. AMOAA was represented by two of our board members: Col Charles Bush and his wife Janice, and Col Leon Holland and his wife Peggy. MOAA's Council and Chapter Affairs Directorate provided a summary of the symposium and I extracted the highlights of the event for our members. The symposium opened with delegates sharing their thoughts and ideas during a series of workshops, which saw them address issues such as how to improve recruiting and retention in their local chapters.
Chapter leaders also attended a leadership workshop, which provided them with chapter management techniques they can use to improve their chapter's effectiveness.  Targeted workshops were held for personal affairs officers, and spouses and auxiliary members discussed the role they play in supporting the local MOAA chapter.
Members of the national staff briefed participants about MOAA's marketing and recruiting efforts,
pending legislation and the association's The Officer Placement Service( TOPS ),  which assists members and spouses who are seeking a job in the civilian sector.  Participants also learned more about the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, received an update on the "Give Me 10" recruiting campaign, and tips and suggestions on how to improve their newsletter and Web sites. During the closing session , chapter leaders and personal affairs officers shared their feelings and recommendations with all of the participants. Their presentations along with presentations given by members of the national staff and guest speakers will be shared with the respective chapters. We are encouraged to review this material, which contains information and ideas on improving our local chapters. I can assure you that we will do so.
We had two excellent and different programs this past September and October. Paul Schmidt, the Resident Agent in Charge of the Austin Office provided a very upbeat discussion on the world of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Then in October we were enlightened on Reverse Mortgages by King Cole, a specialist with Wells Fargo. Thanks to those two gentlemen for sharing their expertise with us.
Remember: Support is a two-way street.

Thanksgiving
In the United States Thanksgiving is a four day weekend which usually marks a pause in school and college calendars. Thanksgiving meals are traditionally family events where certain kinds of food are served. First and foremost, turkey is the featured item in most Thanksgiving feasts (so much so that Thanksgiving is sometimes called "Turkey Day"). Stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, turnips, yams and pumpkin pie are commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinner.
The first official Thanksgiving Proclamation made by the American colonies who rebelled against the Crown of England was issued by the Continental Congress in 1777.
1789 Washington designated a national thanksgiving holiday for the newly ratified Constitution, specifically so that that the people may thank God for "affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness" and for having "been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed..."

A Military Thanksgiving
We offer gratitude this day
For blessings multiplied,
For family, fellowship and friends
Who remain by our side
Through many separations,
And distances so vast
That lesser love would be subdued.
It's doubtful it would last.
We share these bonds of feeling
That stretch between our souls
When distance separates us
As we pursue our goals.
But you have favored us with friends,
And families that clutch
Us close although we wander
Around the globe so much.
So Lord this day we offer thanks,
And bow our heads in prayer.
We recognize that
You're the source
Of all the love we share.

Chaplain's Corner
(By Chaplin Ernie Dean)
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Every once in a while, someone will ask you or me, "You look far, far away. What are you thinking about?" You have heard this statement any number of times: "A penny for your thoughts! "In most cases, these comments are sincere and represent love and caring. They are a type of affirmation, too, for the implication is that our thoughts are worthwhile.
Are they? What do you and I think about in our deepest, most significant moments? It helps, periodically, to practice some introspection to encounter first hand the thoughts that are behind our actions. Indeed, each of us has taken some knee jerk reaction or spoken something quickly "off the top of my head". Yet, there are precious moments when thoughts and deeds are of monumental consequence to the quality of our lives and to the character of our relationships with those around us.  No single thought or spoken word or deed tells all about us, but each is an indicator. When certain indicators begin to accumulate, trends become habits and habits become manifested as behavior.

As we reflect and contemplate, we can evaluate these behaviors and ask ourselves if the person we are observing is the person we want to be. Now it is decision time. Do we deteriorate, attempt to hold to the status quo, or (hopefully) do we forge ahead as a new or renewed person?
What we are doing or not doing today plants the seeds for our tomorrows. We become our actions or inactions, whether we mean to or not. Obviously, then, today is the precise time to determine who we are-deep down inside of our minds, hearts, and souls.
May we encounter joy and peace as we rub against the center of our beings-joy and peace that will pull us onward to ever more joy and peace, never to an indulgent self-satisfaction. On this fantastic journey of discover and becoming, we will meet others who are on their journeys and the sharing is beautiful. Most lovely of all, however, we will meet the Holy One whom we revere as the Great Spirit, creator of life, heaven and earth, even eternity.
May you be filled with an exuberant spirit of thanksgiving

Celebrate by coming to the AMOAA Dinner meeting!

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."              Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Q. Do you know what prizes the communists are now offering for recruiting new party members?
A. If you get one new member, you don't pay dues. Two new members, you can quit the party. And for three, you get a certificate saying you were never a member.
... But you can pay your AMOAA dues by sending in the form on the last page.

BUMPER STICKER
WHY IS "ABBREVIATION" SUCH A LONG WORD?

You love a lot of things if you live around them, but there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, nor any before nor any after, that is as lovely as a great airplane, and men who love them are faithful to them even though they leave them for others. A man has only one virginity to lose in fighters, and if it is a lovely plane he loses it to, there his heart will ever be.
             - Ernest Hemingway, August 1944
Raffle tickets at the door. $1 each or seven for $5. It just might be your turn to win!
