PERSONAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE MINUTES
20 OCTOBER 2008

PRESENT Charles Bush, Ernie Dean, Pat Eagan, Leon Holland, Merlen Howe, Norm Jefferson, Fred Lord, Martha Pyle, Maurice Quigley

Chaplain Dean opened the meeting with an Invocation

MINUTES of the June meeting were approved as corrected - correction: add Maurice Quigley to the list of those present at the June meeting.

OLD BUSINESS
A. Norm Jefferson unable to complete useful telephone numbers list due to inability to get a response from the Defense Finance & Accounting Service. It was decided that Norm would write a letter to MOAA detailing the problem - Merlen Howe will sign the letter

B. Status of suggestions made at the June meeting. The consensus is that items are being handled.

C. Leon Holland distributed copies of the Survivor's Information Guide to each member of the committee.

NEW BUSINESS
A. Leon Holland called attention to an article in the recent MOAA magazine (Military Officer) recapping what the P.A. Committee is structured to do.

B. Recent P.A. Activities

1. Ernie Dean mentioned pastoral concerns - Ben Meharg's wife is very ill and awaiting a liver transplant. Chuck Szendre's cancer has escalated and he is being treated in San Antonio

2. Merlen Howe reported he had received several good comments regarding the P.A. services.

3. Leon Holland commented that he had met a new member of AMOAA - Jan Cox - at the October dinner meeting. He gave her information on several items she was interested in. She needs information on Social Security.

4. Maurice Quigley asked if an Estate Planning Attorney had been scheduled as a guest speaker. Wes Lokken will look into it.

COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS
A. The question was asked as to the status of a list of attorneys who will help military survivors at the time of a death. Leon will check on this.

B. Martha Pyle, who represents the ROWC at the Military Service Coalition group, commented that there are many matters covered by this organization that could benefit our members. Merlen Howe suggested we have a link on our AMOAA website to furnish this information.
Chaplain Dean closed the meeting with a benediction.
Meeting adjourned at 1320 hrs.
