James D. Brotherton
Captain USN (ret)

     Captain James D. Brotherton graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign through the University of Texas Navy ROTC. He served his first sea tours in USS RADFORD (DD446) at Pearl Harbor and USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CVA31) at San Diego, CA in Damage Control billets. From 1971-77 he served as Engineer Officer in USS MORTON (DD948) at Pearl Harbor, on the Staff of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Representative Pearl Harbor as an Assistant Material Officer and on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron Twelve in Athens, Greece as Material Officer.
     He attended the U.S Naval Postgraduate School from 1977-79 and was awarded a Master of Science Degree in Management. From 1979-81 he served as an Engineering Department instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers School Command at Newport, RI and from 1983-85 he was Executive Assistant to the Assistant Deputy Commander Surface Ships Logistics Management at the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC.
     Captain Brotherton commanded USS WHIPPLE (FF1062) at Pearl Harbor from 1985-88 in operations in the Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf. From 1988-91 he was Director, Combat Direction Systems at the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC.
     Captain Brotherton commanded the USS WORDEN (CG18) in Pearl Harbor from 1991-93 during operations in the Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch. From 1993-94 he served as Deputy Director, Acquisition Career Management at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, DC.
     His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (2 Gold Stars), Navy Commendation Medal (Combat V and Gold Star) and the Navy Achievement Medal.
     Captain Brotherton retired from the U.S. Naval Service in 1994 and worked with Lockheed Martin Technology Services (Washington, DC) until 2002 as a Senior Systems Engineer and Program/Project Manager when he retired again and moved to Austin, Texas.
     Currently Captain Brotherton is involved in substitute teaching in the Eanes Independent School District, is a U.S. Naval Academy Information Officer for Bowie and Westlake High Schools, and is the Greater Central Texas Council Navy League Vice President for Operations.
     Captain Brotherton is married to the former Nancy Fry of Dallas, Texas. They have a daughter, Melissa, and a son, Peter.
