Roger Longenbach
Born in Bloomington, Illinois but raised in Normal, Illinois where I attended
K through 10th Grades. My father moved the family to Rantoul, Illinois (home of
Chanute AFB) for job purposes. Rantoul Township High School is where I graduated
and was the first place that I came into contact with military dependents. My
father flew Observation Planes in Europe during WWII but did not talk much about
his service.
I attended Texas Christian University in Ft Worth. It is there that I joined the
Air Force ROTC. I received a two year scholarship and graduated with a major in
Chemistry and minor in Biology. After receiving my commission I was first
assigned to Myrtle Beach AFB in South Carolina as a Disaster Preparedness
Officer. After 18 months I was assigned to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam where I served
as Base Disaster Preparedness Officer for 13 months.
Upon returning to the States I served as the Disaster Preparedness Officer at
Edwards AFB, CA for 14 months before going to Wright-Patterson AFB, OH to get my
Master's in Systems Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology. At
Edwards I met my wife, Patti Sue Harris. We were married at Edwards AFB in
December 1972 between the first and second quarter of obtaining my masters. We
have two sons and two grandchildren.
After receiving my degree, we were assigned to the Space and Missile Systems
Organization in Los Angeles, CA; Headquarters, Air Force Systems Command for two
assignments; Electronic Systems Division in Bedford, Massachusetts; and finally,
Electronic Systems Division, Detachment 1 that supported US Space Command in
Colorado Springs. While at Air Force Systems Command, I attended the Defense
Systems Management College and then as a member of a traveling Program
Management Consulting Team. During my 17 years in Systems Command I served as a
Program Control Officer, Executive Officer, Scientific and Program Management
Assignments Officer, and as Deputy and Program Manager/Director.
After retiring from the USAF, I have worked as a Systems Engineer for Computer
Technology Associates of Bedford, Massachusetts and as a Project Manager for
Digital Equipment Corporation/Compaq/ Hewlett-Packard Company. I retired from
the computer industry in 2005. I have been involved with local chapters of the
Military Officer Association of America, the American Legion, and Veterans of
Foreign Wars.
We moved to Georgetown, Texas in 2009 from Scottsdale, Arizona to be closer to
our grandchildren who live in NW Austin.
