HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL!

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER

ONWARD TO MILLENNIUM III
As we see 1998 arrive, it should be interesting to consider that Millennium III is only three years ahead.
With the new millennium beginning on 1 January 2001, let us play with some palindromic numbers about years. [You] Recall that palindromes are letters, numbers or statements that read the same backward or forward. Thus we have radar or 1991 or Able was I ere I saw Elba. If you are a Latin fan (besides tangos, sambas, etc.), try: "Roma tibi subito motibus ibit amor."
The most recent palindrome year since 1881 was 1991. With Millennium III soon in the offing, 2002 will be next. Then it will be 110 years for each successive one (2112, 2222 , etc.) until Millennium IV begins in 3001.
To get a perspective on the length of a millennium, consider what was happening in the world when the current Millennium II began in 1001 (the only time that a millennium has or will begin on its first palindrome number).
Leif Erikkson was making visits to Greenland and the New World. Pagan Vikings were being assimilated in England and Normandy, while others were exploring Morocco. The series of Crusades had not yet started.
Moreover, it would be more than a century before Europe's beautiful cathedrals would (continued on next page)

 DoD Retiree Dental Plan

The recently approved contractor for the DoD retiree dental plan, Delta Dental of California, plans to start enrolling beneficiaries in the new plan in January, with coverage to be available as of February 1. Delta Dental will be mailing information on the new program to eligible participants in January. ....
All retired members of the uniformed services . . . , their spouses and eligible child dependents, and unremarried surviving spouses of deceased members will be eligible to participate in the plan. ....
Since the government will not subsidize the plan, the full cost must be funded from enrollees' premiums. Premiums will be collected by payroll deduction from DoD retired pay. Delta will bill other policy- holders directly. Initial enrollment must be for a minimum of 24 months, and enrollees must pay four months' premiums in advance.

Board Profile

LTC MARY ARMSTRONG KELSO
Treasurer

LTC Kelso hails from the far end of IH-35- born and raised for some years on a farm outside Northfield, Minnesota. Her school years alternated between Northfield and Long Beach, California. The trips between the two places covered much of the West-which probably assured her lifelong love of travel.
She received a B.A. degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield. In 1943, she began a year of internship in dietetics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center--receiving a commission as second lieutenant in the Army Medical Department in August 1944.

After basic training at Camp Carson, the "then" LTC Armstrong asked for and received assignment to the Transportation Corps and to the US Army Hospital Ship Acadia, making seven round trips to ports in Europe and Africa and three trips to the Philippines (the last one on the Lewis B. Milne). Relieved from active duty during the fall of 1946, she spent four years with the Veterans' Administration and was recalled to duty in January of 1951.

Upon becoming a member of the Women's Medical Specialist Corps, she was stationed at Beaumont Army Hospital, Camp Chaffee, Fort Benning, Fort Polk, Fort Huachuca, Fort Knox, and Fort Jackson. She also served two tours of duty in Germany and one in Vietnam, where she was Consultant to the Surgeon, USARV, for Food Service.

In 1957, work became a bit dull, so LTC Armstrong learned to fly and flew the Powder Puff Derby solo in 1962 and 1966.

Prior to her retirement in 1970, LTC Armstrong married COL Winchester Kelso and became LTC Kelso and, for the next five years, was an Army wife. Following COL Kelso's retirement in 1975, the couple spent a year and 35,000 miles traveling the United States with a travel trailer and a Jeep.

They settled in Austin in 1976. COL Kelso was a University of Texas Texan.
Their later travels included several cruises and trips to Europe and the Pacific. In 1986, they took scuba lessons and earned advanced diver status. Then, two years ago, LTC Kelso lost her travel-dive buddy. She is now involved in the activities of the SAGE program. Lifetime Learning Institute, and Senior Activity Center. She has also resumed her travels--having made two trips to Europe last summer. Her next scheduled trips are to Buenos Aires, the Falkland Islands and Antartica in February.

PRESIDENT'S COMMIMTS continued
begin rising, and then many generations needed to complete each masterpiece. (Many of us have been fortunate to visit a number of them and marvel at their structural beauty and amazing architecture and engineering, such as the origination of flying buttresses that supported tons of stone roof materials and yet incorporated huge and fragile stained glass windows.)
The Dark Ages passed to the Middle Ages. Though the Black Plague reduced Europe's population by half, the Renaissance era brought new levels of knowledge, arts, music, and literature as the centuries progressed.
More centuries passed, and we showed up to find an ever- improving life, despite a Depression. Then [came] major and minor wars. (Such events discouraged much time worrying about palindromic oddities.) Yet, with all considered, would anyone prefer to have lived and raised our children in any century before this?
With that brief resume of the millennium past, we can exchange hearty "HAPPY NEW YEARS!" while appreciating the good fortune that has existed in our lifetimes. So, HAPPY NEW YEAR! to all until we can say : HAPPY NEW MILLENNIUM!
