News and Information for Members

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Thanks!

Last month the Chapter enjoyed a visit and presentation by Gen Mike A. Nelson, our national president of TROA. The meeting had the highest attendance we have had in many years, and the attendees were all lively and friendly. The presentation by GEN Nelson was smooth, professional and informative.  The individual discussions by attendees with the General, both before and after the formal presentation, were intelligent and enlightening. In other words, it was a good program from beginning to end, and all who attended were glad to have been there. This is what membership in a professional retirees' organization should be like!
A few special recognitions need to be made for activities that may not have appeared obvious to all attendees, but which made the evening the success at it was:
First and foremost, there were the efforts of our immediate past president, Gerry Shinn and his wife Val, who made arrangements for the General to visit  some two years ago, then followed through to see that the ground work was laid for this particular date; then undertook the most important task of acting as the official liaison between the chapter and the General and Mrs.. Nelson for the visit. Gerry and Val performed all of their tasks so well that it almost seemed like the General and Barbie Nelson were simply dropping by as old friends for a chat. There was not one issue or hitch that Gerry and Val had not anticipated and handled.
Similarly, Paul Fritz, who had responsibility for the facilities, the set-up, the cocktails and the meal was equally efficient - so much so that he was to arrange for the seating, service and feeding of more than double our regular attendance with such speed and efficiency that every part of the program proceeded exactly as scheduled and with no delays.  In fact, it was all handled so smoothly that I dare say that no one even realized the magnitude of the project.

Paul also arranged for the extra cocktail seryer and even created procedures to handle a few late comers no one even realized the magnitude of the project. Paul also arranged for the extra cocktail server, and even created procedures to handle a few late comers who asked if they could attend on the morning of the meeting. Paul must have been a logistics whiz on active duty!
Then, we had the work of Ray Kruger, filling in for Walt Conley, with the able assistance of Tom Spencer (who always seems to be around when an extra hand is needed!) in performing the essential task of checking in the attendees, marking those prepaid, and collecting payments from the others. Ray and Tom handled their duties with minimal back up, even though they were processing double a normal night's attendance and had a fair number of persons from other chapters and from Austin who had never attended a meeting.
Then, there was the work of Joyce Hoover, filling in for Mary Conley, and Don Loucks, getting his baptism of fire as the new membership officer (with assistance from Verne Philips), who stepped up and performed their tasks so smoothly that virtually no one even knew that neither had been doing this every month. And the "welcoming" activities by the former presidents, most notably Stan Bullard, who took our guests around and oriented them to our table seat selection and happy hour procedures, and gener- ally made them feel wanted.
Yes, the program went well, and I am proud and pleased to have played a part - but I can also see what can be, and how our chapter can do more and be better for all members than it is. Hopefully this recharging of batteries by our national leader and active partici- pation by so many will not be an isolated event. We need to take new encouragement from this meeting, andtheoutslanding efforts by these members -and all others who attended and benefited from the fellow- ship and presentation. Can we do it? I don't see why not!
