|In January, NACA resident Ann
Teich began a monthly project designed to help the transients in the area and
at the same time help clean up the neighborhood. The NACA Sojourner Project
allows transients to earn HEB gift cards by picking up trash in the NACA area
on designated days.
The first clean up occurred on January 4th, as three people volunteered for two hours to pick up trash along Rundberg. The agreement was that one bag of trash would result in a $5 gift card donated by HEB. Each of the three picked up four trash bags.
The General Manager from HEB generously donated $100 in free gift cards to start the program off. To continue the effort in the coming months, Ann requested $100 per month from NACA for more gift cards, to be paid for through the BFI/Allied Waste* beautification funds. The donation was unanimously approved by NACA members at the January 15 meeting, with the understanding that restrictions would be placed on the gift cards to limit the types of goods that may be purchased. After three months, the project will be evaluated to determine its future.
The first Sunday of every month is designated for the Sojourner project. Ann is quick to point out that NACA volunteers will certainly be welcome (sorry, no gift cards for residents!) She also requested volunteer help for trucking the bags of trash from the curb to the trash dumpster behind Little Walnut Creek Branch Library. HEB has also volunteered the use of its compactor. In addition, Allied Waste has a program that pays for recyclables.
