AUSTIN FIRE DEPARTMENT  FOURTH OF JULY FIREWORKS WARNING

Citizens should call 311, not 911 for fireworks complaints

AUSTIN, TX   With very little rain to speak of and more than 11 days of record 100+ degree heat, the Fourth of July holiday weekend is a worrisome one this year for area firefighters and police officers. The Austin Fire Department (AFD) and Austin Police Department (APD) are issuing a reminder today to all citizens that fireworks are illegal within the Austin city limits. Each year, there are hundreds of brush, grass, and structure fires across the state started by fireworks, doing millions of dollars in damage and risking the lives of innocent bystanders. Nationally, there is an average of more 10,000 injuries per year from fireworks, with 40 percent of those being children ages 10-14.

This year, APD will be partnering with AFD to help enforce the ordinance ban on fireworks. It is illegal to possess fireworks within the City of Austin. It is illegal to use or sell fireworks within the City of Austin and within 5,000 feet outside the city limits. The fine is $248; that may not seem like much but if your fireworks cause bodily harm and/or property damage, the Austin Fire Department can charge you with assault and/or arson, both felony crimes. The Austin Police Department will be responding to fireworks complaint calls made to the 311 system. Please remind citizens not to call 911 for fireworks complaints.

Remember, sparklers can reach temperatures of 1,800 degrees and smoke bombs shoot a flame of two to three inches when ignited so even though these fireworks are legal, they can still be very dangerous.

APD and AFD instead encourage citizens to attend one of the many free fireworks displays that will be happe

Useful Websites!

The site, www.cityofaustin.org/specialevents, tracks permitted city events, such as running events and parades. The site provides advance notice of street closures to citizens so they can plan the best traffic routes to avoid delays and supplements the existing www.austinroadworks.org site.

The site allows visitors to keep track of road closures geographically with an interactive map, or chronologically through a calendaring feature.

Austin residents can now use new information to help fight crime.

Austin police announced it will provide up-to-date crime information via the Citizen Observer Web site.

According to the site, “Citizen Observer...enables citizens to receive and respond to text, e-mail, and web alerts from your agency.”

An APD spokesperson said the web-based alerts will be faster and more up-to-date than its competitors like SpotCrime . Austin residents will be able to get information on crime trends, the latest crimes, weather alerts, and even amber alerts on the site. Officials say Austinites can also send tips to APD through the site:

Chew Treats Needed to Calm Shelter Dogs on July 4th

While people love the sights and sounds that accompany July 4th fireworks, many dogs become frightened and stressed. That's why the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services' Town Lake Animal Center needs rawhide bones and chews to help keep the dogs in its care calm and safe on July 4th.

The shelter's location puts the animals in close proximity to the City's largest 4th of July fireworks display. The noise and lights of the fireworks can cause a great deal of stress for the dogs at the shelter, so shelter managers are putting out the call for rawhide chew treats and toys.

"Chewing can be a healthy way for dogs to relieve stress," says Dorinda Pulliam, assistant director for Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services. "By providing all the dogs at the shelter with natural rawhide treats, we can help re-direct their nervous energy away from potentially dangerous activities-- like attempting to jump or dig to escape their kennels-- to the healthier, safer activity of chewing on rawhide."

While ingesting a great deal of tough rawhide can be hard on a dog's digestive system, the rewards of providing chews to the dogs at this time of year or at other times of stress far outweigh the minor risks the chews might pose.

"We like to do whatever we can to try to help our dogs get through the fireworks displays safe and healthy," says Pulliam. "We're hoping the wonderful, pet-loving people of Austin will help us out by donating natural rawhide chews in the coming days."
Natural rawhide treats of all shapes and sizes are needed, and can be dropped off at the Town Lake Animal Center during the hours: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. weekdays, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Church, youth, neighborhood and business groups, as well as individuals, are encouraged to organize collections and bring the rawhide treats in to the shelter anytime before July 4th. Town Lake Animal Center is located at 1156 W. Cesar Chavez, between MoPac and Lamar on the north side of Town Lake.
