GOALS OF THE NORTH AUSTIN COALITION OF NEIGHBORHOODS:
Representing over 87,000 Neighbors. Building a Better Austin One Neighborhood at a Time
We are asking for media support for our Third Annual Night Without Crime on Rundberg Lane, October 9th, 6-8 p.m., at 300 E. Rundberg Lane. This event is part of the National Night Out Activities for North Austin. Once again, the North Austin Coalition of Neighborhoods will come together to support the North Creek Georgian Acres Neighborhood Association in their efforts to clean up a neighborhood over run with crime, drugs, and prostitution.
* Prostitution is not a victimless crime
* Drug-dealing is not a victimless crime
The community and the police have stepped up and decided to
battle rampant crime, including drugs and prostitution, in the
area. Why? Prostitution on residential streets is not acceptable.
Drug deals on residential streets are not acceptable. Violent
crime on Rundberg within a stone's throw of Barrington Elementary
is not acceptable. The continued rising numbers of car and house
burglaries associated with this crime center is not acceptable.
*We need new solutions to old problems
As Austin grows, we will continue to see more and more big city
issues where urban growth and crime occur side by side. North
Austin has concerned neighborhoods, churches and businesses, and
plenty of volunteers who want to solve the problem of
Rundberg/I-35. Isn't it time for the city officials and the court
system to start working with this community to find solutions
today, to problems we know Austin is going to continue to face
tomorrow?
* Humane solutions, Not expensive solutions
Parole and jail sentences have not worked. We need to look at
other solutions, like offering rehab and community service in the
area of the arrest. We need to find more effective and humane
solutions to prostitution and drug arrests.
*Communities are working together; can our
elected officials cooperate?"
We have neighborhood associations, and numerous churches and
businesses that have stepped up and embraced this community's
efforts. Isn't it time our elected officials get involved and
help as well?
*No Neighborhood Left Behind
Austinites have frequently spoken out and said that growth has to
be balanced with quality of life. If we protect our green spaces
and our water and local businesses, and Austin's culture, but we
leave neighborhoods behind, then we have still failed as a City.
