neighborhood with reinforcement that broad participation is key theme for the
meeting. Approximately 50 people
attended this meeting including: Vice President-Larie Amsler; Secretary- Sam Amsler; Treasurer-Jessica
Currie; Members at Large- Dale Sellers; Greta Sellers; Maria Mayer; Louis
& Gene McCoy; Bob Young; Virginia Young Members absent: President- David Nuhn; Carol Fritz; A.J.
Walker; Tom & Nancy Miner |
L Amsler & J Curry conducted the meeting that encompassed discussion per agenda prepared by David Nuhn. The following agenda includes - notes of discussion in caps.
Review of Crime in the Neighborhood
Those
attending the meeting responded to stories about burglaries, car THEFT, and
mail theft. In addition a neighbor
related experience with stolen pickup that WAS LOCKED and parked in
driveway. Another neighbor related her
experience in questioning strangers in the neighborhood. mail theft was reported from MAILBOX AND
attempt to modify check as payable for $2,300. a comment by one neighbor offered good advice in that he never placed
mail containing checks in HIS MAILBOX. He also pointed out that parking vehicles in garage was wiser than
leaving the vehicles in driveways.
What do we need to do? Participant responsibilities include:
JESSICA CURRY PRESENTED CONDITIONS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH THAT INCLUDED
NEED FOR BLOCK CAPTAINS AND MEETINGS OF AT LEAST THREE TIMES A YEAR. IN ADDITION, 50% OF NEIGHBORHOOD ARE EXPECTED TO BE PRESENT AT THESE
MEETINGS. JESSICA EMPHASIZED NEED FOR
NEIGHBORS TO GET TO KNOW THEIR NEIGHBORS AND ADVISE THOSE NEARBY OF
NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERNS.
SUGGESTION WAS MADE FOR NEIGHBORS WALKING THE
NEIGHBORHOOD TO WEAR ARM BANDS INDICATING THEIR RESIDENCE IN NEIGHBORHOOD. ANOTHER WAS TO PLACE A FORM OF ID ON
VEHICLES FOR RESIDENT VEHICLES.
· Reporting suspicious persons and activity to the police
COMMENT FROM NEIGHBOR THAT RESPONSE TO NON-VIOLENT CRIME WAS LOW PRIORITY FOR CITY POLICE. REPORT OF FIREARMS INVOLVED EVOKED A PRIORITY RESPONSE.
· Be a concerned neighbor! Pay attention to what's going on in the neighborhood.
· Keep a pad and pen near the front of the house. This will allow you to write down anything you see that seems out of the ordinary (including automobile license plates.)
· You may not have to report it right away but it may jog your memory later.
· Talk to your neighbors about events in the neighborhood and tell them when there will be unusual events at your house (out of town, relatives arriving, etc.)
· When you know your neighbor will be away on vacation, pick up their newspapers and put them by their door for them.
