Welcome! The Northwood neighbood is a diverse community with over 600 homes located just northwest of the Loop 1/Parmer Lane intersection. Established in the 1970's, this community has grown from a suburban neighborhood to an established urban community. Our AssociationThe association meets on the first Wednesday of every odd number month at the Milwood Branch Library at 7PM. Attendence and participation in the association is greatly encouraged. Membership information is available here. Important Vote Scheduled for November MeetingAt our next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 5th (7 PM, Milwood Library), we will take a vote to expend funds for a neighborhood sign. Subject to approval by the Texas Department of Transportation, the sign would be mounted on the wall just outside the entrance on Silver Creek (at Parmer Lane). For the past several months, we have researched possible materials and contacted sign vendors before settling on a particular proposal with a cost of $3,900. The sign would be made of steel, primed and painted. The following image represents our vendors' rendering of the new sign. Because this is a significant expenditure of funds, we are providing notice and asking for a vote of the membership. Neighborhood by-laws do not provide for proxy voting, although those voting must be current on dues. For more information about the proposal, contact Cheryl Vanek at 244-4368 or northwoodpresident@gmail.com. NEW FLOODPLAIN MAPSThe City of Austin recently approved new floodplain maps that will take effect September 26th. The date is important because after that date, flood insurance will be based on the new maps and may cost substantially more. In some areas, the maps expanded the area in Northwood that is considered flood plain (basically running along the creek). Therefore, we strongly recommend that Northwood residents check the new maps - you can do so by going to www.cityofaustin.org/watershed/flood.htm. Select "Interactive Viewer" and type in your address to see if your house is in the floodplain. If you are new to the flood plain, you can purchase flood insurance at a lower rate if you do so by September 26th. Contact your insurance agent for more information, or contact an association officer. National Night OutOnly in Texas! The Neighborhood Night Out (NNO) celebrations will shift from August to October this year as a test to whether there will be greater participation in cooler weather. The 25th anniversary celebration will be on October 7th. National Night Out is designed to:
To sign up your neighborhood block party as an official NNO site or for more information, go to the City of Austin Police Department's website on Neighborhood Night Out. To have a chance for police, fire or emergency medical services personnel to stop by your neighborhood, register by 5 PM August 25th. Loop1/Parmer Lane Traffic Improvements ProjectTxDOT will be improving traffic flow on Loop 1/Parmer Lane. The primary purpose of this project is to improve traffic mobility through the Loop 1 and Parmer Lane area. The project will widened Parmer Lane Bridge over Loop 1 from 6 lanes to 9 lanes, add two right turn lanes from eastbound Parmer to Loop 1 and add another west bound lane to Parmer west of Loop 1. Lane improvement will also be made to Loop 1 frontage roads. The following image image provides you with an architectural rendering of planned changes to the Parmer bridge and Parmer west of the bridge. It does not include details on the southbound frontage road changes. The project is scheduled to be completed in the late summer to early fall of 2009. For more details regarding the proposed changes, please visit the following document, which is the original description as provided by the project manager. The project has a web site; please refer to this URL for additional information and updates. You can also go to www.tx.dot.gov and search for Parmer Lane.
