GRACIAS TO PAPA VOLUNTEER: YUN CHO
by Isidora Sanchez
Yun Cho has been a PAPA Volunteer since February
2003 and has contributed over 90 hours of her time. She currently
works as a planner at the Water Resource Department for the
Texas Water Development Board. Yun has been helping us throughout
the years as a document translator for our Program Representing
Immigrant Survivors of Abuse. She translates supporting documents
such as birth certificates, letters and client affidavits
for VAWA applications. For her continued dedication and support,
Yun Cho is our Volunteer of the Month.
Why were you interested in volunteering
for PAPA?
My ex-roommate who worked for SafePlace was
contacted by someone from PAPA who was looking for a Korean
translator. She asked me if I would be interested in helping
with translations and that’s how I started engaging
with PAPA.
What’s your favorite part of
your volunteer job?
Feeling that my work would benefit other Koreans
out there who are deeply in trouble. Also, finding out that
their case is making progress and that the person will soon
be getting their green card.
What has been your favorite moment
during your volunteer time?
Typing Korean on my computer, but most of
the time I feel sad during my volunteer time because of the
reading of people’s stories that are difficult to be
told.
How has PAPA changed your life?
PAPA opened my eyes to the world that I didn’t
consciously pay attention to. Maybe, I didn’t want to
accept it [violence] existed. Now, whenever I have the chance
to meet with Koreans here in Austin, I try to spread the word
out about PAPA and their available help. I think there are
still cultural differences placing many obstacles that force
Korean women to hide or feel hesitant to ask for help.
