January 25, 2012 Meeting Minutes

    POINTers IN PERSON Minutes
    Chapter # 10 Central Texas/Austin
Submitted by Lin ONOFRIO Brinkman (#1388)

Meeting of POINT #10 on 25 January 2012 was held at the home of Bill and Lin ONOFRIO Brinkman [#1388 ] in Round Rock, Texas with 9 present.
Lin shared an article from the Sons of Italy QUESTO MESE newsletter about an 1873 report of 7000-8000 children kidnapped from Italy and sold in the large cities of the U.S. for slave labor. It was thought that their parents were sending them to what they thought were better lives. This was disturbing news to all present, and none had come across this information before.

Joe MASTRANGELO [#2614) has completed his Access Data Base for Masrangelo/Pugliese civil records, including:

    • Nati - 4217 records recorded
    • Marriage - 1383 records recorded
    • Morti - 2957 records recorded

Joe will begin to systematically use it to fill out his Family information.
He posted a thank you letter on 13 January and a request for additional information to Fr Romanazzi in Putignano requesting: Parents of Francesco Paolo Mastrangelo - b: cir 1750, m: Maria Domenica GIOTTA, f: to Sebastiano Vincenzo Mastrangelo. Wife of Francesco Paolo Mastrangelo - b: 12/17/1770. f: Angelo Pasquale SAVERIO Mastrangelo, m: Donata Antonia CONTEGIACOMO.
Joe contacted Roni LEPORI; he saw her posting on the Barigen list. She is a researcher who happens to be deaf. He has been compiling a list of information/contacts for her to use to facilitate her research. She is researching GIOVINAZZO. Her original question: "Is it feasible to write a letter to the city hall in Giovannazzo (sp)?"

Betty TOMMASELLI Glaser [#5297] has found that her [and cousin Lin ONOFRIO Brinkman's] great-grandmother, [1877-1954] Fiorentina RUBANO's great-grandfather, Bartolomeo, had a brother, Nicola Rubani, born in 1809. He married Maria Battista GIAMATTEI on 15 September 1838. This adds new names to research : GIAMATTEI, RUGGIERI, VILLANI, SILVERSTRI, SIMONE, ZUPPA, COFRANCESCO, and as far back as 1720. Because there are names in common, Betty sent a letter to Domenico CARLO in Sopra, Bergamo, Italy, and is awaiting a reply.

Don VILLONI reported that the Williamson County Genealogical Society is sponsoring a seminar on Saturday, 17 March at the Round Rock United Methodist Church. Guest speaker will be Josh Taylor.

Sandra GIARRUSSO discovered information on the ship on which her husband Al's grandmother, Maria D'AMICO [nee D'AURORA] sailed in March 1902. The ship's name was "Sicilia", which had originally been built for the Hansa Line, German flag, in 1890, and was named "Stubbenhuk". It was sold in 1894 and renamed Sicilia, with Hamburg/New York and Mediterranean/New York service. It was sold to Japanese owners, Japanese flag, in 1913, and renamed "Komagata Maru"; renamed "Helen Maru" in 1925, and wrecked off Japan in 1926.

Jeanie MARSALIA [#4251] passed around printed copies of her family tree charts and two Christmas cards she received from relatives from Caselle Torinese, Italy. She is also researching her mother's French ancestry.

Our next meeting will be held on 22 February 2012.
