P.I.P. #10 MINUTES, 27 JUNE 1997
Lin Brinkman opened the meeting. There were 12 members, and two newcomers (Ross & Bonnie Zinnante from Georgetown, Tx.) present.
Deepest sympathy was expressed to the absent Marilyn Maniscalco Henley for the loss of her father, Peter Maniscalco.
Linn reminded all that there would not be a July meeting, and also of the planned "mini-genealogy workshop" , and "pot luck dinner" at the August 23, 1997 (Saturday) 1:00 P.M. meeting. Linn requested that members bring a dish of some sort for the event.
The club collectively welcomed Ross and Bonnie. Bill Brinkman provided a brief explanation of the location of the local LDS/FHC, and where they could begin researching Ross' Italian ancestors.
Linn read a letter she recieved from Chuck Panico (POINT # 1848) from the Las Vegas area, inquiring into our interest in participating in the 1998 SW Regional Conference. The letter was accompanied by a interest survey which was completed at the meeting, and is being sent back to Chuck. Linn passed on an invitation from the Italian Cultural Assoc. of Austin to attend a cultural meeting on 17 August (Sunday) at the Borders Cafe (Borders Bookstore) at Hwy 183, and Great Hills Trail at 5:00 P.M. The speaker will be Danilla Bini from the Univ. of Tx. at Austin.
Linn began the roundtable of progress reports with news of a response she recieved from a letter she sent 17 months ago! The response was from a cousin from Philadelphia who she will be visiting during their trip north next week. Eugina Luken displayed some pictures of her Cassaibane parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts & uncles.
Virginia Gerick is still searching for her grandfather. She found an "Italian Family Research" brochure which contained a map of Italy, form letters, and a glossary of words to fill in the blanks on the form letters. Bill Brinkman has offered to research some items for her when he returns from his and Linn's trip north.
Sharen Nichols (whose thanks we owe for acting as Recording Secretary in Marilyns absence) shared a tremendous wealth of information she recieved from an uncle, on research of the Dawson/Kornes family. She also reported that she has sent Family Chart forms to cousins in Colorado for them to fill out with information relative to the Appino family. She has also sent for LDS Ship Records relating to Giovanni Appino.
Shiela Dugash is delving into the "Internet World" resources researching Italian Ancestors.
Joe Mastrangelo shared some pictures recently received from a cousin's wife of her wedding. The picture contained an excellent shot of her Mother and Father-in-law (Joe's GGrand aunt and uncle). She also sent a picture which was taken in Putignano,Bari,Italy of Joe's GGmother, and all four of his GAunts (two of which Joe never knew existed until their records were found in his search thru the Putignano civil records at the LDS). Joe shared information he recieved from the NY Historical Society, and the Maritime Center in London England regarding the SS Boadicea - the ship that brought his maternal ggparents to New Orleans in 1880. Unfortunately, no pictures of the vessel exist. He is still searching for his maternal gfather's DI, the paper work mill has now forwarded his request to the Newark NJ office of the INS - this is the third office the request has been directed to. His search for the Birth Cert. of his uncle Joseph Pizzolato has turned up blank in NY, and he is now directing his search to the Diocese of New Orleans. Joe shared the Summer 1997 edition of hte NIAF NEWS with the group.
Ross Zinnante provided a list of the surenames he is researching - all in Sicily: DeBetta, Mancuso, & Cangelosi.
Frank & Beth Henry have returned from Pittsburgh, while there he had the opportunity to speak with relatives, and learned that his maternal gfather is buried in Italy. They brought back Italian delicacies which they shared with the group. Frank is still researching Italian ships, and may need to go back further than 1909. They informed the group that they will be going to Italy in October.
Reminder that there will not be a meeting in July, and the Mini-workshop will be held on 23 Aug.
