Marilyn MANISCALCO Henley (#1653)
Virginia MACRI Gerick (#2730) opened the monthly PIP meeting Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bank ONE in Round Rock, Texas with 18 members and guests attending. Absence was noted of President Lin ONOFRIO Brinkman (#1388) and Secretary Marilyn MANISCALCO Henley (#1653). The Brinkmans are currently touring Germany and Italy. Marilyn Henley had a previous engagement. Guests were Mary Jo BELK of Gun Barrel City (Henderson Co.), Texas, Pat OXLEY of Austin and Diane (daughter of Member Jeanette Green) BIRDWELL of Dallas.
Don VILLONI is trying to validate records of his grandfather of the 1903 era through Census records in Cleveland, Ohio where he lived. He found his grandfather's address on his passport of 1937. Don will be traveling in the Cleveland, Ohio and Philadelphia area in the next month or so.
Joe MASTRANGELO (#2614) passed around his grandfather's birth certificate and his greatgrandparents marriage certificate which he had received. He also showed a picture of the ship, S.S. Manuel Calvo, which he had received from the Steamship Society in Baltimore, Maryland. Joe also mentioned several articles as aids to genealogy; the Family History Center, Wordlist-Italian, Wordlist-Latin, Saints-Breakout of Days, Family Tree Maker-Quarterly Newsletter and the book, Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson..
Marie MASTRANGELO showed 2 volumes of a publication from Norway with genealogical records of her family from the 1600s. These books were loaned from Harvard University through the Austin Public Library Inter-library loan.
Mary Jo BELK is researching the names - SCOMA, DI PALERMO, GRIZZAFFI, SALERNA, MARULA, LIGGIO, SAPARITA, MARINO and PINTO of Corleone, Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
Augie TROIANI updated his research of first Italian settlers in Travis County. He discussed JOSEF BAPTISTA COSTA, son of an Italian Lawyer in the Texas era of 1850 - 1875. COSTA was Chief Justice of Travis County for the period of 1852 to 1858. He noted that COSTA was a County Commissioner for the period of 1872 to 1876.
Bill WALE displayed some of his latest findings - a grandfather's birth certificate and backup documentation representing 22 names, PIZZALATO - 9, GEBBIA - 6 and GIORIANO - 7.
Frank Henry (INNARINO)(#3258) spent time in San Diego recently, continuing his research concerning the ship his father came on. He had received conflicting information from various sources.
Eugenia ASSAIBENE Luken continuing research work at the LDS center.
Sheila BAYHA Dugosh reported no new information.
Pat OXLEY is researching BUFFO - Comune of PRASCORSANO, her greatgrandfather JOHN BATISTI BUFFO born 1869 and FERRERO - Comune of CANISCHIO, her greatgrandmother MARY CATHERINE FERRERO born 1867.
Jeannette GREEN displayed birth certificates of grandmother and great grandmother, a record of grandfather's wedding and noted name of the witness - LAMONTE. Thinks they're cousins.
Diane BIRDWELL showed how she made the special shopping/hand (historical) bag for her mother's Christmas gift. The shopping bag displays images of old pictures. Diane explained how she used special transfer paper for picking up the images from old pictures and transferring them onto the surface of the back using a hot iron. Diane also presented some forms of the National Archives - Southwest Region, i.e. Microfilm Publications at the Southwest Region used for Genealogical and Historical Research, Visiting the National Archives - Southwest Regions, Beginning the Naturalization Search, and Italian Genealogy Research - Checklist. These forms will be beneficial to members doing research in that area. James Gerick agreed to have extra copies made for the members.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.. Our next meeting will be April 18, 1998 at 1:00 p.m.
