Low Level Sensing consists of power level sensing, position encoding, and other basic sensing.
We are reviewing position encoder selection prior to freezing a spec. Potentiometers are cheap and established in commercial servos but more error prone than digital encoders and require an A/D conversion. Digital encoders are precise, reliable, and considered desirable. Active digital encoders output a conditioned bounce free signal but are more complex and expensive. A passive silver on glass digital encoder may provide adequate performance.
