ProtoAndroid and Friends

Cool new humanoid lifeforms.

NEW- ProtoAndroid's Favorite Resource Links, Latest (Dec.'96) shop photos, Machine Ethics, and a 3D concept animation.

A System Architecture Overview puts everything in place. ProtoAndroid's Machine Vision over the net (bloated 500K images page) points towards a distributed future.

The Carcass Page describes the body. A unique Three Axis Actuator was developed for use in hips, shoulders, wrists, neck, and waist. The Airpower System is a self contained unit with twin sound encapsulated compressors, charging electronics, and battery pack. Kinematics strategies have been firmed up. "Desktop" Robot Research Arms were built to provide control engineers with test-beds while the carcass gestates in the machine shop.

Modeling realistic emotion and personality is a major goal. First developed for the ProtoAndroid, FaceSpace, EmotionSpace, and related persona modules are useful for other applications.

The first General Specification was a best guess for its time. A revised version is underway. Some old Progress Reports exist.

Named "Cool Robot of the Week" (Aug.26,'96) on Nasa's Telerobotics site.

The H2 (HyperKinetic Humanoid) robot, also known as the Martial Arts Robot is the ProtoAndroid's dim witted kinematically gifted sibling. ProtoAndroid's relatives include Cog at MIT and projects described at the Waseda Univ. Humanoid Project Home Page.

CRASH (Computers, Robotics, and Artists Society of Houston) is supporting development of key ProtoAndroid systems.
