WINTER MIGRATION

Open Call for Bike Nomads

Join the annual bike caravan from Austin, Texas, to Mexico's El Cielo Biopreserve, and back.

BIOBIKE recycles bikes for Mexican Field Biology, Village Collectives (ejidos), and Community Education. Riders and supporters last year supported 2 bike shipments, 5 community bike shops, biorescue, and specialties such as bat study and crocodile census. Riders do "unlittering" of all sites along routes. Riders witness migrant and general social conditions, civil rights compliance, & ecological realities along the post 911 militarized border. Riders support Migrant and Maquilla worker solidarity. We also perform Bike Circus, an Austin-born movement of circuses now touring world wide.

Sustainable adventure- escape winter, eat exotic vegan food with new friends, explore varied biomes,  learn neotropical gardening & sustainability with native teachers and scientists. Well scouted routes from Gulf Coast to Sierra Madre, two kinds of desert, cloud forest. Swim in crystal clear streams, burn fat and get fit. Special waypoint camps include Padre Island, Old Guerrero ghost town, and Canyon de la Huasteca.

The bikers ride in rhythm with birds, moonlight, and northers to "fly" south. Southerly spring breezes waft us back to Austin. Bike provided to anyone willing to pedal it down to a receiving biologist, or just to the border. Build a nomad bike at a community bike shop. Soup up your current bike, or buy a used bike to trick out, or commission a custom recycled touring bike, fully loaded, from local bike activists.

Winter migrations cover two or three months starting in december, but riders can opt for short stints. Shipments of donated bikes, tools and parts and offers a ride for nonbikers or one-wayers with tight calenders. Bus catch up or return is also easy. Individual expenses last winter ran around $200 a month mostly exotic pleasures. We save money (no heating/rent/car, no US prices). Donations and volunteer work help low income riders make the trip.

bike folk, Spanish speakers, biologists and gardeners, indy media, writers, performers, artists, techies, social and eco activists are especially welcome
