Iron Work from February, '96

Tom Lupton is shown turning tube stock on the lathe for a custom fit once the gate is galvanized.

A detail of initial composition of forged elements (before torch bending & fitting) is shown below.

A tree shot of the big scrolls. This little image represents over twelve feet of layout.

The uppermost mocking bird will reach 16 feet high. Note the photographer's shadow.

This is what a mass of superb forgings looks like before assembly; a $5 pile of scrap ;-).

A hard to read close-up of the main upper hinge spar. Primer has been sprayed on welding and grinding work to help spot any flaws.

Reuben Valdez and cousin David Santos, showing off a forged mockingbird. The Santos cobbled design is based on techniques of the late Joe Perez, as improved by Nick Brumder's matchless powerhammer skills.

...the largest carved stones and the most awesome iron work ever seen in Central Texas...

Thanks for flying PolyCosmos.
